Naver to buy Xerox's Europe AI research centre ZDNet

Naver will acquire France-based Xerox Research Centre Europe (XRCE), the company announced, in a bid to strengthen its AI business and expand in Europe. South Korea's largest search giant this year created a lab to focus on AI research. Earlier this month, it announced a partnership with US chip giant Qualcomm to expand its AI platform, named Clova, which is a joint project with subsidiary and chat giant Line. It partnered with compatriot Mirae Asset Daewoo, Korea's largest brokerage company, to apply AI in financial services. It is also applying AI and machine learning technology to its search and apps. The 80 employees at the research centre will join Naver, with the deal expected to close in the third quarter.


Panasonic unveils hanger that deodorizes clothes

It could be the end of laundry. Panasonic has developed a clothes hanger that deodorizes shirts and jackets by releasing nano-sized negatively charged particles into the air around the garment. Called Deodorant Hanger MS, the gadget is said to reduce odor intensity within 5 hours and the Japanese firm claims it works especially well to eliminate the smells of smoke, sweat and grilled meats. It could be the end of doing laundry. The system requires a power source and is equip with a unique cable that is plugged into a wall outlet, but the device also includes pack for batteries in case users are without an electrical socket.

Artificial intelligence has caused for increased debates on whether or not it's good for the entire world due to the possibilities of job loss and war. Deriving Probability Density Functions from Probabilistic Functional Programs

The probability density function of a probability distribution is a fundamental concept in probability theory and a key ingredient in various widely used machine learning methods. However, the necessary framework for compiling probabilistic functional programs to density functions has only recently been developed. In this work, we present a density compiler for a probabilistic language with failure and both discrete and continuous distributions, and provide a proof of its soundness. The compiler greatly reduces the development effort of domain experts, which we demonstrate by solving inference problems from various scientific applications, such as modelling the global carbon cycle, using a standard Markov chain Monte Carlo framework.


Link Mining for Kernel-based Compound-Protein Interaction Predictions Using a Chemogenomics Approach

Virtual screening (VS) is widely used during computational drug discovery to reduce costs. Chemogenomics-based virtual screening (CGBVS) can be used to predict new compound-protein interactions (CPIs) from known CPI network data using several methods, including machine learning and data mining. Although CGBVS facilitates highly efficient and accurate CPI prediction, it has poor performance for prediction of new compounds for which CPIs are unknown. The pairwise kernel method (PKM) is a state-of-the-art CGBVS method and shows high accuracy for prediction of new compounds. In this study, on the basis of link mining, we improved the PKM by combining link indicator kernel (LIK) and chemical similarity and evaluated the accuracy of these methods. The proposed method obtained an average area under the precision-recall curve (AUPR) value of 0.562, which was higher than that achieved by the conventional Gaussian interaction profile (GIP) method (0.425), and the calculation time was only increased by a few percent.

This technique allows early detection of lameness from cow gait, which was previously difficult. It is hoped that a revolution in dairy farming can be achieved through detailed observation by AI-powered image analysis. Dairy farmers are busy with routines such as cleaning cowsheds, milking, and feeding, so it's very difficult to determine the condition of cows.

Earlier this month, a resident in a rural province of South Korea found a small, sky-blue unmanned plane perched nose-up against a tree in a remote forest. The drone belonged to the North Korean military and apparently had flown south for five hours, capturing images of a sensitive new U.S. anti-missile system before crashing. It lacked missiles or other weapons like the larger, more advanced models used by U.S. forces in the Middle East. But South Korean officials and security experts consider such flights unlawful incursions. As world powers focus on North Korea's emerging nuclear capabilities, its drone program is raising concerns about espionage and aggravating already tense relations with its southern neighbor.


Artistic AI paints portraits of people who aren't really there

Mike Tyka paints the portraits of people who don't exist. The subjects of his ephemeral artwork are not born from any brush. Rather, they are sculpted -- roughly -- from the digital imagination of his computer's neural network. Faces are "interesting and we humans react strongly to them, we tend to read a lot into them," Tyka explained over email. "I find I connect with them when I work with them, I'm curious about who they might be, if they existed."
