Kodi tears into illegal add-on sites and 'fully loaded box' sellers
Kodi has blasted sites and repositories that promote the use of illegal add-ons, and says it doesn't care if its user base drops as a result of them shutting down. The TVaddons library recently went offline with no warning, following popular Kodi add-on Phoenix, which provided access to TV shows, films and sports channels. Criminals are also selling media players pre-loaded with these add-ons, which have become known as "fully loaded Kodi boxes", despite having nothing to do with Kodi. It has now acknowledged the fact that a multitude of add-ons and repositories have started shutting down, and torn into their operators. "Due to recent legal action against websites and repositories promoting add-ons that use pirated (stolen) media content, many have shut-down their services. This is driving a large increase in users complaining in our forums and on social media about their "Kodi Box" no longer working," it wrote in a blog post.

The Robotarium: A remotely accessible swarm robotics research testbed
When developing algorithms for coordinating the behaviors of swarms of robots it is crucial that the algorithms are actually deployed and tested on real hardware platforms. Unfortunately, building and maintaining a swarm robotics testbed is a resource-intense proposition and, as a consequence, resources rather than ideas tend to be the bottleneck and swarm robotics research does not progress at the rate it could. The Robotarium sets out to remedy this problem by providing remote access to a large team of robots, where users can upload their code, run the experiments remotely, and get the scientific data back. This article describes the structure and architecture of the Robotarium as well as discusses what constitutes an effective, remotely accessible research platform. This paper won the IEEE Robotics & Automation Best Multi-Robot Systems Award at ICRA 2017.

Twice in the space of six weeks, the world has suffered major attacks of ransomware -- malicious software that locks up photos and other files stored on your computer, then demands money to release them. It's clear that the world needs better defenses, and fortunately those are starting to emerge, if slowly and in patchwork fashion. When they arrive, we may have artificial intelligence to thank. Ransomware isn't necessarily trickier or more dangerous than other malware that sneaks onto your computer, but it can be much more aggravating, and at times devastating.
The Trump Administration Can't Stop China From Becoming an AI Superpower
Last Thursday, Texas senior senator John Cornyn stood before an audience of wonks at the Council for Foreign Relations in Washington, DC, and warned that America's openness to investors looking for new ideas in technologies like artificial intelligence was putting it in danger. "Most of what China wants to invest in these days is leading-edge US technology that's a key to our future military capabilities," he said. "Unless the trend line changes, we may one day see some of these technologies incorporated in China-made equipment that can be used against our country in the event, heaven forbid, of a military conflict." Cornyn highlighted China's interest in robotics and artificial intelligence as particularly concerning. His warning--and pledge to introduce legislation that could restrict Chinese investment in technology companies--came the week after Reuters reported, citing unidentified Trump administration officials, that the administration is considering a similar policy, also motivated in part by fears of China gaining access to valuable AI knowledge. However, Cornyn's diagnosis and proposed cure could lead to a result opposite to the intended one.

The ARM Institute is now one of 14 Manufacturing USA institutes and the 8th funded by the DOD. Each Manufacturing USA Institute focuses on a technology area critical to future competitiveness – such as additive manufacturing, integrated photonics, or smart sensors.
Can a robot be man's best friend?
We hear little about the many cobots – robots that collaborate with humans – on our factory floors and in shared workspaces. Only when a rogue robot at a car parts factory in the United States killed a technician last year did their existence come to life. More than 300,000 will be sold worldwide in the three years to 2019, according to the International Federation of Robotics. "The reality is that most of our customers struggle to find enough labour. This problem is becoming even more pronounced as many factory workers retire and millennials are less inclined to work in manufacturing jobs," explains Jim Lawton, chief product officer at Rethink Robotics.
