Alibaba to Launch Product Similar to Amazon Echo: Source

U.S. News

A logo of Alibaba Group is pictured at its headquarters in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, China, October 14, 2015. "Amazon Echo", launched in 2014, is a speaker which one can leave on all day and give voice commands to, similar to Siri on an Apple Inc iPhone. Alibaba's new product would be made available only in China and speak only Mandarin, the source told Reuters. Apple and Google, a unit of Alphabet Inc, have unveiled products similar to Echo with the HomePod and Google Home. The Information, a technology website, was the first to report the news on Thursday.

The Trump Administration Can't Stop China From Becoming an AI Superpower

Last Thursday, Texas senior senator John Cornyn stood before an audience of wonks at the Council on Foreign Relations in Washington, DC, and warned that America's openness to investors looking for new ideas in technologies like artificial intelligence was putting it in danger. "Most of what China wants to invest in these days is leading-edge US technology that's a key to our future military capabilities," he said. "Unless the trend line changes, we may one day see some of these technologies incorporated in China-made equipment that can be used against our country in the event, heaven forbid, of a military conflict." Cornyn highlighted China's interest in robotics and artificial intelligence as particularly concerning. His warning--and pledge to introduce legislation that could restrict Chinese investment in technology companies--came the week after Reuters reported, citing unidentified Trump administration officials, that the administration is considering a similar policy, also motivated in part by fears of China gaining access to valuable AI knowledge. However, Cornyn's diagnosis and proposed cure could lead to a result opposite to the intended one.

Zume pizza uses robots to deliver in four minutes

Daily Mail - Science & tech

A pizzeria is using super-speedy robots to make fresh pizzas - and for Mountain View residents it could mean dinner is at their door just four minutes after being ordered. California's Zume pizza has pioneered a robot-assisted technique for making the perfect pizza base in just nine seconds. The'Doughbot' is designed to replace the person who spins dough which shaves off 36 seconds of the pizza-making process. Zume pizza has now created a robot-assisted technique for making the perfect pizza base. Silicon Valley's Zume Pizza, which began delivery in April 2016, is using intelligent machines to grab a slice of the multibillion-dollar pizza delivery market.

Google introduces fully-automated 'Smart' display campaigns

#artificialintelligence

Automation isn't new to display campaigns on the Google Display Network, but with the new Smart display campaigns, it's not just the creative that's automated. Targeting, bidding and the ads all run on autopilot powered by machine learning. The system pulls advertiser-provided headlines, descriptions, logos and images to create responsive text, display and native ads. Bids are set, based on Target CPAs, for each auction as the system determines the likelihood of conversion. Trivago, Hulu Japan and Credit Karma were among the beta testers for this new campaign type.

World Intelligence Congress focuses on AI - Xinhua

#artificialintelligence

Artificial intelligence (AI) is the focus of an ongoing expo in north China' s Tianjin Municipality. The first World Intelligence Congress started Thursday, with 16 forums and a 6,000-square-meter exhibition area displaying achievements in AI. Robin Li, CEO of China's online search Baidu, said during his speech during the expo that artificial intelligence could be the biggest driving force in human history in the next 30 to 50 years. "In the past 40 years, information technology drove global technological innovation and economic growth," Li said. "Now, AI has become the major focus of global search engine and IT companies."

Artificial intelligence could boost the UK's household spending power

#artificialintelligence

While some workers are worrying about how artificial intelligence (AI) could cause them to lose their jobs, a new study has shown that it could be a welcome boost to the economy. Research from PwC indicates that UK gross domestic product (GDP) could be 10 per cent higher by 2030 as a result of AI, increasing individual household spending power by up to £2,300 per year. This GDP increase would be the equivalent of an additional £232bn, making AI the biggest commercial opportunity in today's economy. "While we expect that the nature of jobs will change and that some will be susceptible to automation, our research shows the boost to UK GDP that AI-driven products and services will bring will also generate significant offsetting job gains, as well as boosting average real wage levels," said PwC economist Jonathan Gillham. Out of the UK regions, England stands to gain the most with GDP expected to be up 10.6 per cent.

Microsoft squeezed AI onto a Raspberry Pi

#artificialintelligence

Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning usually work best with a lot of horsepower behind them to crunch the data, compute possibilities and instantly come up with better solutions. That's why most AI systems rely on local sensors to gather input, while more powerful hardware in the cloud manages all the heavy lifting of output. It's how Apple's Siri and Amazon Alexa work, and how IBM Watson can tackle virtually any major task. It is, though, a limiting approach when it comes to making smarter Internet of Things and applying intelligence when there isn't Internet connectivity. "The dominant paradigm is that these [sensor] devices are dumb," said senior researcher with Microsoft Research India, Manik Varma.

Agenda / Artificial Intelligence and Robotics

While developing negotiating chatbot agents, Facebook researchers found that the bots spontaneously developed their own non-human language. From the personal assistants in our mobile phones to the profiling, customisation and cyber protection that lie behind more and more of our commercial interactions, AI touches almost ever... It's widely accepted that Artificial Intelligence (AI) will have a huge impact on our lives in the coming decades - but what's its value to the global economy? Scientists are working on ways artificial intelligence algorithms could digest massive texts and extract their meaning, presenting it in terms regular people can understand. China has filed more than 8,000 AI patents in the five years to 2015, a 190% growth rate that outpaces other leading markets significantly. The US military is developing robots capable of flying all types of aircraft.
