Ethical Considerations in Artificial Intelligence Courses

The recent surge in interest in ethics in artificial intelligence may leave many educators wondering how to address moral, ethical, and philosophical issues in their AI courses. As instructors we want to develop curriculum that not only prepares students to be artificial intelligence practitioners, but also to understand the moral, ethical, and philosophical impacts that artificial intelligence will have on society. In this article we provide practical case studies and links to resources for use by AI educators. We also provide concrete suggestions on how to integrate AI ethics into a general artificial intelligence course and how to teach a stand-alone artificial intelligence ethics course.


Efficient Correlated Topic Modeling with Topic Embedding

Correlated topic modeling has been limited to small model and problem sizes due to their high computational cost and poor scaling. In this paper, we propose a new model which learns compact topic embeddings and captures topic correlations through the closeness between the topic vectors. Our method enables efficient inference in the low-dimensional embedding space, reducing previous cubic or quadratic time complexity to linear w.r.t the topic size. We further speedup variational inference with a fast sampler to exploit sparsity of topic occurrence. Extensive experiments show that our approach is capable of handling model and data scales which are several orders of magnitude larger than existing correlation results, without sacrificing modeling quality by providing competitive or superior performance in document classification and retrieval.

Delegates at Newsweek and International Business Times' data science in capital markets event were mesmerised by a video of shoe box-sized satellites, known as "cube sats" being released into the earth's atmosphere. They were then shown the speeded up footage that was being captured: giant oil tanks with floating lids, rising like tides; ships being built from scratch in dry docks; burning flares from steel mills; a picture of the agricultural yields of the entire planet. Professor David Hand, chief scientific advisor, Winton, introducing the event, pointed out that the current AI summer is characterised by what he called "automatic data capture". He said: "Perhaps even more important than big data, we can now observe what people are doing all the time, like shopping for instance. Heterogeneous data is being produced constantly, as you sit here data about you is being captured by computers."


Afghanistan's all-girl teen robotics team denied entry to US

Next month, the inaugural FIRST Global Challenge robotics competition will bring together high school teams from around the world. Taking place in Washington, DC, over 150 teams are set to participate. However, while the team from Afghanistan's robot will be there, the team itself won't because the US has denied their visa applications. The team is made up of six teenage girls who traveled over 500 miles to the US embassy in Kabul for their visa interviews. They actually made the trip twice in hopes that another round of interviews would help their case.

As the battle for Mosul rages on, Iraqi forces recently discovered this ISIS factory which has been making various death machines - from aerial drones to multi-wheeled robot bombs. The crude hardware was unearthed in a warehouse in the Al-Shifa neighbourhood on the fringes of the Islamic State-occupied Old City. Working with whatever they can salvage, the jihadis have been retrofitting hobby drones with explosives and, in some cases, building devices from metal pipes and repurposed small engines - including from motorbikes.

Microsoft is working to bring artificial intelligence to extremely small devices, but the work requires compression techniques and other technologies so it can run on the tiniest of CPUs. The Raspberry Pi 3 is one of the most popular devices you can buy. For $35, this inexpensive all-in-one computer board can be used to power numerous projects ranging from miniature Linux-based PCs to gaming consoles and more. Now Microsoft reports that it built a device based on the Raspberry Pi 3 that uses artificial intelligence to hunt down pesky rodents. The device was created by the head of Microsoft's Machine Learning and Optimization group, Ofer Dekel.


A Real RoboCop? Dubai Police Will Deploy Mini Self-Driving Patrols Equipped With 360-Degree Cameras, Drones

Dubai, the Future City, recently announced its plans to debut self-flying taxis this year. Now, Dubai Police is taking its force to the next level with small autonomous patrol cars equipped with drones, according to Gulf News (via The Verge). The self-driving police cars are expected to hit the road by the end of the year. The vehicles will come with biometric software that will scan individuals it comes across, looking out for criminals and those who are suspected of breaking the law. The police car, which is equipped with 360-degree cameras, will patrol different locations in Dubai, will be on the lookout for suspicious activity and will scan crowds.


Toyota's cute support robot completes its first US in-home test

Toyota's been working on a few great projects aimed at helping people with limited mobility, and they've made a big announcement today. They have completed their first North American in-home trial of HSR, the Human Support Robot. The company worked with Romulo Camargo, a veteran who sustained serious injuries in Afghanistan. He's now paralyzed from the waist down. HSR's mission was to make Camargo's life easier and improve his quality of life; it helped him open doors and brought him water and snacks. The HSR is lightweight and is equipped with a telescoping, articulated arm with a soft, flexible hand.

Just weeks after unveiling a robotic officer, Dubai police have announced its latest gadget - tiny self-driving patrol cars which can scan for criminals. The vehicles, due to hit the streets by the end of the year, will be fitted with special biometric software that can identify wanted suspects. They are about the size of a remote-controlled car, and will patrol the city scanning all the while with a 360-degree camera. Hackers can use brainwave signals to steal passwords

Hackers can steal passwords and PINs by analysing your brainwave signals, a new study has found. Researchers from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and the University of California Riverside collected data from electroencephalography (EEG) headsets, which sense the electrical activity inside a person's brain. They're growing increasingly popular amongst gamers, who can use them to control characters using their brain signals. Crucially, however, EEG headsets also monitor your brainwaves when you're not playing. The I.F.O. is fuelled by eight electric engines, which is able to push the flying object to an estimated top speed of about 120mph.
