LAS VEGAS โ "Mark Minevich didn't mince words in his Rise of the Autonomous Enterprise presentation here at Interop last week: "Whoever doesn't get involved in AI will die and get phased out." Minevich, a senior advisor to the government's Council of Competitiveness in Washington D.C., ticked off several examples of companies that have transformed industries by leveraging AI technologies, including Amazon with its personalized recommendations and Tesla. "Tesla has accumulated over 750 million miles of data to make cars smarter," said Minevich. The good news is that the U.S. is widely viewed as a leader in AI. Minevich said there's more AI investment in Silicon Valley, for example, than anywhere else in the world and it's growing. Last year estimates put AI investments at $2.5 billion, a figure that's forecast to double to $5 billion 2017. The team also created a robotic water strider capable of pushing itself along the liquid surface. The robots are described in a recently published paper in the journal Soft Robotics.

A pair of lifelike robots have debated the future of humanity at a technology conference in Hong Kong. The machines, named Han and Sophia, discussed people's limitations and robot's plans to take over the world. They also predicted that robots will be able to do "every human job" in the very near future, and called reality shows "silly".
Facilitating the Human Connection Where it Matters Most
I recently returned from a trip to Japan to see first-hand the role robotics play in senior living communities. While robots are a growing topic throughout the North American seniors' industry, Japan's rapidly expanding elderly population and corresponding caregiver shortage has accelerated the technology. In her 2014 paper published by Brookings, "How Humans Respond to Robots: Building Public Policy through Good Design," Heather Knight discusses why she believes robotics will become an accepted part of daily life. Her premise is that people create the need for machines and guide the plans for development. She writes, "Partnering the capabilities of people with those of machines enables innovation, improved application performance and exploration beyond what either partner could do individually."

Microsoft's AI-powered iOS app tells the blind what's around them
Microsoft hast just launched Seeing AI, an iOS app that it appropriately describes as a'talking camera for the blind'; I've been giving it a whirl this morning and it's actually pretty impressive. Fire up the free app and point your iPhone at anything, whether it's a document, a menu card, a room or even a friend, and Seeing AI will tell you what it is with its voice. I tried it on a bunch of objects and spaces, and the app was astonishingly quick and accurate for the most part. It managed to recognize a guitar, identified me by my face and told me just how far away I was, and even described my living room and shower with some basic details. It was also able to read out the blurb of a book and the ingredients on a ramen packet, and even identified the contents of a photo I sent to the app from the share sheet in Twitter.
