After decades of false starts, artificial intelligence (AI) is already pervasive in our lives. Although invisible to most people, features such as custom search engine results, social media alerts and notifications, e-commerce recommendations and listings are powered by AI-based algorithms and models. AI is fast turning out to be the key utility of the technology world, much as electricity evolved a century ago. Everything that we formerly electrified, we will now cognitize. AI's latest breakthrough is being propelled by machine learning--a subset of AI which includes abstruse techniques that enable machines to improve at tasks through learning and experience.


Fukushima: robot images show massive deposits thought to be melted nuclear fuel

Images captured by an underwater robot on Saturday showed massive deposits believed to be melted nuclear fuel covering the floor of a damaged reactor at Japan's destroyed Fukushima nuclear plant. The robot found large amounts of solidified lava-like rocks and lumps in layers as thick as 1m on the bottom inside a main structure called the pedestal that sits underneath the core inside the primary containment vessel of Fukushima's Unit 3 reactor, said the plant's operator, Tokyo Electric Power Co. On Friday, the robot spotted suspected debris of melted fuel for the first time since the 2011 earthquake and tsunami caused multiple meltdowns and destroyed the plant. The three-day investigation of Unit 3 ended on Saturday. Locating and analysing the fuel debris and damage in each of the plant's three wrecked reactors is crucial for decommissioning the plant. The search for melted fuel in the two other reactors has so far been unsuccessful because of damage and extremely high radiation levels.

Most machine learning is literally prejudice--telling a machine, "based on what you've seen in the past, predict the future." But what do we do when it's also correct? China wants to build a $150 billion AI industry

Artificial intelligence is no exception. Beijing laid out a timeline on Friday for when it expects the country to become a global leader in the frontier technology. By 2020, China's AI technologies and research facilities will match other leading countries, said Li Meng, the vice minister of science and technology. Five years later, he expects "a big breakthrough," and then China should finally become the global "innovation center for AI" by 2030. The remarks at a press conference expand on a policy statement released by China's State Council on Thursday, which set out goals to build a domestic artificial intelligence industry worth nearly $150 billion in the next few years.

New tech puts the AI in dainty as it turns food pix into recipes

The next time you come across a picture of a ravishing dish on Instagram or WeChat that whets your appetite but you can't exactly make out what it is made of, don't wrack your brain trying to guess the recipe. An AI system unwrapped earlier this week helps those with culinary curiosity find the right ingredients of an unknown dish and offers step-by-step instructions how to make it just by analyzing a photo they upload online. Researchers from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Qatar Computing Research Institute have developed a deep-learning algorithm that can whip out a recipe just by "looking" at a photo of the dish. They fed the neural network one million recipes, along with one million photos of their final outcome, from popular websites like Allrecipes.com and Food.com to create a huge database they dubbed, Recipe1M, accessible through a web portal they called Pic2Recipe. With a single click of a button, the website allows users to upload a photo of the mystery dish and then the system, using machine learning, goes through the massive mounds of data to analyze it. It then predicts a list of possible ingredients along with their relevant recipes, then ranks them based on how certain the AI is they match the image.


My Chatbot Hates Me! - The Ape Machine

As with many unreleased apps in the Android app store, it all started with an invite code, this very afternoon about an hour ago. My employer and I were talking about chatbots--as we often do--and it reminded him of an app that was being demoed to a select group of users (actually the user base is huge at the moment), and he sent me an invite code to try out the app. As I described in my previous article, 5 Simple Ways To Optimize Your Chatbot, I usually treat chatbots quite like a bull in a china shop, as I really do want to know how far the technology is at the moment. Again, this is not to be mean to the developers or anything, I am merely hoping that in the coming years we will see huge improvements to the way that most non-technical people will interact with the bot anyway. To be honest, I was initially super impressed when the chatbot asked me if it could tell me a little about itself, and I tried to respond with something I thought it would not be able to recover from, yet it did so effortlessly and beautifully with the response: "Sure, how about we talk about you then," even dropping in the perfect emoticon.
