Microsoft will not kill of Paint, it has now said. The app has been a mainstay of Windows for 32 years, but will be taken out of the main operating system and put in the app store. Nokia's first Android smartphones are on their way. The entry-level model, the Nokia 3, is on sale now for £119.99. The next step-up is the Nokia 5, which goes on sale on 16 August. The Nokia 6 is the highest-specced of the three first handsets and is on sale on 2 August for £219.99. I saw all three back in February and for me, the Nokia 5, at £179.99, is the most interesting.

July 21 – Chinese internet giant Tencent Holdings Ltd. [HKG:0700] officially began its artificial intelligence accelerator at its headquarters in the city of Shenzhen in southern Guangdong province. The company selected 25 startups to receive guidance over the next six months. The accelerator program will provide business knowledge to the teams and will offer a two-day in-depth analysis of industries and technologies on different topics every month. The enterprise will also introduce AI experts and mentors to the startups, offer relevant industry resources and business-building resources. Tencent will also support them in areas including public relations, generating traffic for their apps, social media advertisements and content dissemination.

In this episode of the O'Reilly Data Show, I spoke with Christopher Nguyen, CEO and co-founder of Arimo. Nguyen and Arimo were among the first adopters and proponents of Apache Spark, Alluxio, and other open source technologies. Most recently, Arimo's suite of analytic products has relied on deep learning to address a range of business problems. When we started Arimo (our company name then was Adatao), the vision was about big data and machine learning. At the time, the industry had just refactored itself into what I call the'big data layer'--big data in the sense of the layer at the bottom, the storage layer.

Artificial intelligence (AI) and blockchain are among new technologies that are driving a need for increased data center capacity, according to a telco, announcing an expansion recently. China Telecom said in a press release that these "rapidly maturing" technologies, such as machine learning and adaptive security, will propel investment in data centers. And that they are one reason for its data center-business enlargement. Interestingly, though, data centers themselves may end up using this new tech as heavily as the customers. San Jose, California-based Litbit says in a recent blog post that it has developed the first AI-powered data center operator.
