Mark Zuckerberg angrily responded to warnings about the possible direction of artificial intelligence research. After Elon Musk, suggested that steps should be taken now to limit AI-programs to avoid the outbreak of an eventual dangerous scenario. Zuckerberg argued back saying that critics of unchecked technological AI-programs were'negative, and irresponsible.' Amazon owner, and CIA partner, Jeff Bezos, supported Zuckerberg arguing that artificial intelligence is the future of business and government.

With invasive surgery sometimes being a literal pain in the ass, it's no surprise that scientists are working tirelessly to minimize the need for such procedures. Now, however, China's Harbin Institute of Techonology is hoping to bypass fiddly surgery completely, thanks to its new tiny, swimming robots. Inspired by the fastest human method of swimming, the front crawl, these nanobots travel in a similar fashion, with their magnetic arms rotating and propelling them forward as the researchers apply a magnetic field to the bot's arms. This cleverly designed bot is pretty swift too, able to swim the front crawl at an impressive 10 micrometers per second. Thanks to its hefty arms and impressive speed, the bots have a momentum strong enough that they can even pass through thick liquids like blood in order to administer medicine from inside your veins.

Despite Australia "punching above its weight" in artificial intelligence (AI) research, the country is failing to embrace the technology in the business sector, according to an expert. Within the next five to 10 years, Professor Toby Walsh envisions Australian businesses to be using autonomous cars, buses, trucks, and robot advisors. "In research terms, I think we punch above our weight," the University of New South Wales and Data61 AI professor said. However, he is concerned Australia is lagging behind other countries such as the United States and China when it comes to embracing this form of computer intelligence within our businesses. "There's been quite a long history of research into AI in Australia, but I think we've been a bit less successful about translating that into business," he said.

ST Engineering acquires mobile robot maker Aethon for $36 million

Singapore Technologies Engineering Ltd (ST Engineering) has acquired Pittsburgh, PA-based robotics firm Aethon Inc through Vision Technologies Land Systems, Inc. (VTLS), and its wholly-owned subsidiary, VT Robotics, Inc, for $36 million. The acquisition will be carried out by way of a merger with VT Robotics, a special newly incorporated entity established for the transaction. The merger will see Aethon as the surviving entity that will operate as a subsidiary of VTLS, and will be part of the the ST Group's Land Systems sector. Aethon's leadership team and employees will remain in place and the company will continue to operate out of its Pittsburgh, PA location. ST Engineering, S63 on the Singapore Stock Exchange, is a Singapore-based integrated defense and engineering group focused in aerospace, electronics, and land, sea and air unmanned systems for the battlefield.


Chinese facial recognition firm developing AI to predict crimes

Chinese companies are developing new facial recognition systems that can help law enforcement identify criminals and even potentially predict crimes before they occur, according to a report by Shanghaiist. Equipped with China's photo ID database and the extensive footage taken from public surveillance cameras, the country's facial recognition technologies are able to analyze billions of faces and objects to identify people. China's massive population and lenient privacy laws have made enormous amounts of data available to companies at a low cost to further develop facial recognition software. Wang Shengjin, a professor at Tsinghua University's Department of Electronic Engineering said that while China's primary competitors are other Western tech companies,"[they] are far ahead when it comes to deploying [facial recognition tech] commercially." Due to the fact that Beijing is willing to pay just about anything to ensure national security, quite a few companies are finding the growing industry increasingly profitable.

Tesla regains top Consumer Reports safety rankings

Tesla's Model S sedan regained Consumer Reports' top safety rating after the automaker updated the emergency braking system on the vehicle. Tesla provided an over-the-air update in July to its software on the Model S to include automatic emergency braking (AEB) at highway speeds, Consumer Reports said. In April, the magazine, which provides an annual rating of vehicles sold in the United States, lowered its rating on the Model S, noting that Tesla's last software update for the emergency braking system was not adequate. Google enters race for nuclear fusion technology

Google and a leading nuclear fusion company have developed a new computer algorithm which has significantly speeded up experiments on plasmas, the ultra-hot balls of gas at the heart of the energy technology. Tri Alpha Energy, which is backed by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, has raised over $500m (ยฃ383m) in investment. It has worked with Google Research to create what they call the Optometrist algorithm. This enables high-powered computation to be combined with human judgement to find new and better solutions to complex problems. Nuclear fusion, in which atoms are combined at extreme temperatures to release huge amounts of energy, is exceptionally complex.

But as these systems gain ever-greater degrees of intelligence and independence, their increasing autonomy has some critics worried that humans are ceding too much power to devices whose decision-making processes we don't fully understand (and which we may not be entirely able to control). What constitutes an Autonomous Weapon System (AWS) depends on who you ask, as these systems exhibit varying degrees of independence. Sense and React to Military Objects (SARMO) weapons like the Phalanx and C-RAM are able to react to incoming artillery and missile threats, targeting and engaging them without human oversight. However these aren't fully-autonomous, per se -- they simply perform a set automated task.
