SAN FRANCISCO: Machine learning and AI-based startups can Google for help as the search giant launches its Google Developers Launchpad Studio Accelerator Programme for startups to build and scale their products across the globe. The accelerator programme is targeting startups in all global markets, including India, as well as homegrown players in the US. The length of the programme is still being worked out. "In the past four years (of Google Launchpad Accelerator), we have learned a lot while supporting early and late-stage founders," said Roy Glasberg, the global lead at Google Developers Launchpad. "While working with startups on innovative solutions, such as applying artificial intelligence to solve transportation problems in Israel, improving tele-medicine in Brazil and optimising online retail in India, we have learned that these firms require specialised services," Glasberg said.

No-one seems to have the answer to this crisis, and with the current state of NHS underfunding it doesn't look likely that one will emerge any time soon. Over the pond, however, there is a huge push towards solving radiology's problems -- and the UK is being left behind.

Toyota hopes to showcase eco-friendly tech at 2020 Games
NAGOYA – Toyota Motor Corp. is considering developing an electric vehicle for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games in a bid to showcase its eco-friendly technology, sources close to the move said. Toyota, one of the top-tier sponsors of the games, plans to introduce the EVs among the official cars used for transporting athletes and officials between venues, the sources said Wednesday. The nation's largest automaker has signed on with the International Olympic Committee and International Paralympic Committee to be a worldwide partner. Under the deal, reached in 2015, Toyota will work with the committees through 2024 to provide "sustainable mobility solutions," according to the games organizing committee. The sources said Toyota is hoping its EVs, which emit no carbon dioxide, will be used along with other vehicles, including the automaker's fuel-cell models, which run on hydrogen and produce only water emissions.

Much of the stuff around us and spread throughout our Milky Way is made up of "extragalactic matter", according to the research. The study used computer models to find out how the matter around us came to be acquired by our galaxy. It found that supernova explosions throw out huge amounts of matter from galaxies, spreading it throughout the universe as it is carried on powerful galactic winds. Google targets AI startups with Developers Launchpad Studio mentorship program
Google today announced a new six-month program called Developers Launchpad Studio, created to support AI and machine learning startups around the world. Helpful perks to creators to be made available at the Developers Launchpad Studio include product validation support and introductions to AI investors, as well as feedback and advice from people like Google director of research Peter Norvig and Yossi Matias, head of Google's R&D Research Center in Israel. Participants will also receive $50,000 in financial support without the need to give Google equity, as well as product credits for services like Google Cloud. Companies ranging from small startups to larger post-series B companies that are using machine learning or AI to improve their products are encouraged to apply. The first class of applicants must submit a maximum 15-page pitch deck by August 31.

Detecting and Explaining Causes From Text For a Time Series Event

Explaining underlying causes or effects about events is a challenging but valuable task. We define a novel problem of generating explanations of a time series event by (1) searching cause and effect relationships of the time series with textual data and (2) constructing a connecting chain between them to generate an explanation. To detect causal features from text, we propose a novel method based on the Granger causality of time series between features extracted from text such as N-grams, topics, sentiments, and their composition. The generation of the sequence of causal entities requires a commonsense causative knowledge base with efficient reasoning. To ensure good interpretability and appropriate lexical usage we combine symbolic and neural representations, using a neural reasoning algorithm trained on commonsense causal tuples to predict the next cause step. Our quantitative and human analysis show empirical evidence that our method successfully extracts meaningful causality relationships between time series with textual features and generates appropriate explanation between them.
