Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg had a little tit-for-tat this week over artificial intelligence. Does it represent an existential threat to humanity, as Musk argues, or does it hold great promise to improve our lives, as Zuckerberg believes? On a Facebook Live broadcast, Zuckerberg declared, "I think people who are naysayers and try to drum up these doomsday scenarios -- I just, I don't understand it. It's really negative, and in some ways I actually think it is pretty irresponsible." Musk took the kerfuffle to Twitter, replying: "I've talked to Mark about this. His understanding of the subject is limited."

Ant is building artificial intelligence into new products, including an insurance claim system that uses machine learning to process images of accidents taken on a smartphone, using them to determine how serious the damage is and begin to process the claim with an insurer. The company, which reportedly holds billions of dollars in customers' money before and after executing transactions, has also begun to offer small loans to consumers, evaluating their creditworthiness partly on the basis of their spending history.


Confident Intel raises full-year revenue outlook by $1.3bn » Banking Technology

Following a successful quarter, Intel has raised revenue outlook across the full-year owing to solid performance in artificial intelligence (AI) and driverless tech, reports Telecoms.com Quarterly figures were looking pretty impressive too. Total revenue was reported at $14.8 billion, a year-on-year increase of 9%, while net income stood at $2.8 billion, up 11% year-on-year. The team now expects to clock up $15.7 billion in the next quarter (plus or minus $500 million, because we regularly misplace change as well). "Q2 was an outstanding quarter with revenue and profits growing double digits over last year," says Intel CEO Brian Krzanich.


Smart glasses let you turn off the lights in the blink of an eye

Blink and the lights go out. A sensor on a pair of glasses that can pick up the motion of your skin when you blink could be used to switch the lights on and off, or to help those with limited or no mobility write messages on a computer. "The good thing about the technology is the high sensitivity, which may become particularly useful in places where the motion is very limited," says Ambarish Ghosh at the Indian Institute of Science, who wasn't involved in the research. The sensor, called a triboelectric generator, is thin enough to fit on the arms of a pair of glasses. It is made from multiple polymer layers with a coating of metal that acts as an electrode.


Why humans AND fish can't recognize faces upside down

Humans aren't very good at recognizing upside down faces - but then again, neither are fish. Researchers have discovered that the Japanese rice fish struggles to recognize inverted faces, just like humans. But the fish don't struggle recognizing faces when they're orientated the right way up, suggesting that these fish developed a brain pathway for face recognition, just like humans have. Can you recongize who's face this is? Humans read the face as a whole, rather than look at parts of the face, which is why it's harder to recognize a face when it's upside-down Humans don't struggle with identifying objects, such as a sofa, not matter what way up they are.

Kevin Kelly is the Senior Maverick at Wired Magazine, co-founded Wired in 1993 and served as its Executive Editor for the first seven years. His new book is called The Inevitable, where he discusses the 12 technological forces that will change our future. Welcome to the Innovation Ecosystem, with me today is Kevin Kelly to talk about How AI technology will shape future organizations. Kevin, I have to say when we planned this program, you were the first person that I wanted onto this show. So, I'm really pleased that we managed to find some time in your calendar, and thank you very much for making that time. So, Kevin, you described your work as packaging ideas into books, websites, and making them interesting and pretty. Before we get into your new book, The Inevitable, which is about AI technology, can you give our listeners a sense of your back story? Yeah, I was a science nerd in high school, but also interested in photography, and the arts. Couldn't decide whether to go to art school or MIT. In the end, I decided to be a college dropout, and instead because I read the Whole Earth catalogue, I was inspired to make my own education, and went to Asia where I awarded myself a graduate degree in Asian studies by roaming around for eight years mostly photographing the disappearing traditions of Asia. I also caught a really bad dose of optimism in Asia because right before my eyes I saw people lifting themselves out of poverty very, very quickly, and becoming, from some of the poorest nations of the Earth, to some of the richest ones. This was in the 70s? This was in the 70s, right exactly. So, I came back in the 80s, and I was writing about travel because that was something I knew about. I got myself invited onto the earliest experimental online systems in the very early 80s, 1981, or something. I was reporting on it as if it was a new foreign country, like a travel reporter, and I saw something for the first time, which was high technology that was very human and organic.
