It was a rough weekend at Google. On Friday, a 10-page memo titled "Google's Ideological Echo Chamber" started circulating on the company's internal networks, arguing that the disparities between men and women in tech and leadership roles were rooted in biology, not bias. By Saturday afternoon, the tech news site Gizmodo had obtained and published the entire thing. The author, a male software engineer, argued that women were more neurotic and less stress-tolerant than men; that they were less likely to pursue status than men; that they were less interested in the "systematizing" work of programming. "We need to stop assuming that gender gaps imply sexism," he concluded before offering recommendations.

Driverless buses in Estonia have had a number of close calls, including ignoring a speeding police car's emergency lights. The vehicles were introduced in the capital Tallinn in recent weeks as part of the Baltic state's presidency of the European Union. Eyewitnesses have reported a few near misses since, including ignoring a red light, but no'major incidents'. Artificial Intelligence (AI): A new-frontier in legal services competition in Asia

Baker & McKenzie -- In an email interview for this article, Sydney-based Partner Adrian Lawrence, who is strongly engaged in the firm's innovation strategies explained that: "AI is an increasingly important tool in the arsenal of any law firm, in particular for large-scale matters which involve significant quantities of both structured and unstructured data, such as large litigation matters and major M&A transactions. Given these larger matters tend to be undertaken by BigLaw, rather than NewLaw, my expectation is that BigLaw is likely to be more advanced with use of AI solutions at this stage. The majority of commentators see AI as an enhancement of existing capabilities, allowing services to be provided more efficiently and effectively, rather than a replacement of traditional client-facing legal services. There will always be an important role for the experience and human judgment which is an inherent part of good legal advice."
Google's Machine Learning Looks to Improve Predictions in Health Care
The same machine learning technology Google uses to anticipate the next word in a search query is in tests to advance predictive modeling in health care, and the tech giant is teaming up with three universities this year to research its ability to do so. Katherine Chou, head of product for Google's efforts in machine learning for health, has been working on using machine learning for preventive care since 2015, when health care systems reached out to Google for help. Part of the breakthrough now is that "our deep learning technology is finally mature enough to handle the unstructured data that you see in the records," she says. An example of unstructured data is pictures and notes from a physician or nurse that make up the majority of an electronic health record. Google's machine learning can now include those data in a predictive modeling algorithm.

Andrew Ng's Next Trick: Training a Million AI Experts
Andrew Ng, one of the world's best-known artificial-intelligence experts, is launching an online effort to create millions more AI experts across a range of industries. Ng, an early pioneer in online learning, hopes his new deep-learning course on Coursera will train people to use the most powerful idea to have emerged in AI in recent years. AI experts have become some of the most sought-after and well-paid employees in today's tech economy. Deep learning involves teaching a machine to perform a complex task using large amounts of data along with a large simulated neural network. The technique has typically required deep technical knowledge and expertise to master (see "10 Breakthrough Technologies 2013: Deep Learning").
When AI dominates, what will we do for a crust?
What does the worldwide head of research at Google tell his kids about how to prepare for the future of work with artificial intelligence? "I tell them … wherever they will be working in 20 years probably doesn't exist now," Peter Norvig says. Be flexible, he says, "and have an ability to learn new things". Future of work experts (yes, it's a thing now) and AI scientists who spoke to Lateline variously described a future in which there were fewer full-time, traditional jobs requiring one skill set; fewer routine administrative tasks; fewer repetitive manual tasks; and more jobs working for and with "thinking" machines. From chief executives to cleaners, "everyone will do their job differently working with machines over the next 20 years," Andrew Charlton, economist and director of AlphaBeta, says.
Budding inventors find encouragement in Sony's Seed Accelerator Program
Sony Corp., which is emerging from five years of brutal restructuring that gutted its workforce and product lineup, wants to show off a few new things. There's the Aromastic, a digital smell dispenser, AeroSense self-flying drones and a collection of tech-infused accessories called "wena." These gadgets are being dreamed up by the Seed Accelerator Program (SAP), started by Chief Executive Officer Kazuo Hirai in 2014 to encourage invention and risk-taking. With Sony back on solid financial footing, shown by its estimate-topping results in the latest quarter, the company has more breathing room to experiment. Instead of focusing on raw, technical innovation, the devices coming out of the lab hark back to an era when Sony was able to take existing technology and combine it with slick marketing to create must-have gadgets such as the Walkman and Handycam. Another hit product could help Hirai cement his legacy as the one who not only turned Sony around, but got it inventing again.
Facebook's botched Messenger rollout isn't hurting chatbots
Last year, Facebook triggered a wave of hype surrounding chatbots and conversational interfaces in the wake of its rollout of 100,000 bots on Messenger. Sadly, they seemed to have bit off more than they could chew; the campaign was largely a disaster, with the AI behind Facebook's chat platform failing to fulfill 70 percent of user requests. But the tech itself isn't to blame -- it's Facebook's premature and reckless roll-out. The tech is very sound, highly effective, and increasingly versatile. The industry doesn't need any hype or overselling to prove that.
