Musk, co-chairman of OpenAI, has long warned of dire consequences for mishandling AI development. OpenAI itself is a non-profit research company that aims to champion promoting and developing friendly AI in a way to benefit humanity. As with any major technology advancement, however, there will undoubtedly be those which aim to weaponise it and to do so before rivals. Based on Putin's comments to Russia-based publication RT, it sounds as if the nation is among them.

Facial recognition might soon become the norm for payments, with a KFC outlet in Hangzhou, China, receiving commercial payments using the mechanism. Alibaba's Ant Financial affiliate launched the'smile to pay' service at the outlet as part of the company's proposed system of cash-less retail stores, in which it will integrate offline and online retail. All that a customer needs to do is smile at the interface and the payment will be made. The system does not require a smartphone based authentication; all that is needed is to sign up for the Alipay app and enable facial recognition. The point of sale, in this case the KFC outlet, will be equipped with a 3D camera, which will verify a customer's identity by scanning his/her face.

Speaking at a meeting with students on Friday, Putin said the development of AI raises "colossal opportunities and threats that are difficult to predict now." He warned that "the one who becomes the leader in this sphere will be the ruler of the world." Putin warned that "it would be strongly undesirable if someone wins a monopolist position" and promised that Russia would be ready to share its know-how in artificial intelligence with other nations. The Russian leader predicted that future wars will be fought by drones, and "when one party's drones are destroyed by drones of another, it will have no other choice but to surrender."
