The firm got its start uncovering patent-busting prior art for defendants in high-stakes patent infringement suits, where it quickly earned a reputation for finding invalidating prior art in hidden corners of the globe that Google search could never reach -- an unpublished Korean-language PhD dissertation, a rural Norwegian library, even in a New York City pawn shop.

Pop quiz: Who invented the Hoverboard? Of course the original concept was first documented in the "Back to the Future" movie trilogy, but as for the wheeled device that popped up all over malls and city streets in 2015, the answer is fairly complicated. In fact, despite being the No. 1 selling toy in that year's holiday season, it's difficult to name even a single company that manufactured the product. The toy was in fact invented in Shenzhen, China's engineering and manufacturing hub that accounts for nearly 1 million jobs and a disproportionate amount of China's GDP. They all work together to improve on the product, and then they all go back to their respective companies and all make the product.


Every flagship phone in 2018 will probably feature an AI chip

Next year's gadgets, at least beyond the second quarter, won't want to be caught dead without the killer fashion accessory of 2018: an AI chip. Competition for AI chips is so intense globally that we will be able to see AI chip-equipped smartphones in the second half of next year. Samsung will reportedly begin manufacturing AI chips soon with hopes for commercialization within a matter of years. If this turns out to be accurate, the South Korean company will join the likes of Huawei, Apple, and Microsoft in making AI processors designed to be implemented in consumer gadgets. While rumors abound that Samsung's next big announcement is going to be a foldable smartphone, it seems more likely that we'll see an AI chip in the next Galaxy.


Waiting in the wings: Dubai's autonomous flying taxis

With a whirling buzz from 18 rotors, the pilot-less helicopter gently lifted off the ground and soared up into the afternoon sky, the spire of the world's tallest building visible behind it. The recent unmanned flight by the German-made electric Volocopter represents the latest step in Dubai's pursuit of flying taxis. Dubai already has invested in another model of a flying, autonomous taxi, and is working to design regulations for their use. Putting more passengers in the air could free its already clogged highways and burnish the city's cutting-edge image of itself. "It's public transportation for everybody, so you can use, you can order it, you can pay for the trip and the trip is not much more expensive than with a car," said Alexander Zosel, Volocopter's co-founder. "If you build roads, you build bridges, it's a huge amount and it's always much more cheaper to have a system where you don't need that infrastructure."

For Zhao Changlin, an oncologist at a hospital in Guangzhou city, China, life is full of challenges. One of his patients, a woman with late-stage breast cancer, recently begged him to stop her chemotherapy, saying she could no longer bear the pain. Zhao knows only too well the torment the woman is going through – seeing people in pain is an unfortunate but everyday part of his job. He also knows that giving up the treatment could be fatal. "She is only 54 years old. If she continues the treatment, she may have another 20 years in front of her," Zhao said.


PwC's Global Artificial Intelligence Study: Sizing the prize

What comes through strongly from all the analysis we've carried out for this report is just how big a game changer AI is likely to be, and how much value potential is up for grabs. AI could contribute up to $15.7 trillion1 to the global economy in 2030, more than the current output of China and India combined. Of this, $6.6 trillion is likely to come from increased productivity and $9.1 trillion is likely to come from consumption-side effects. While some markets, sectors and individual businesses are more advanced than others, AI is still at a very early stage of development overall. From a macroeconomic point of view, there are therefore opportunities for emerging markets to leapfrog more developed counterparts.


AI will have bigger impact than social media: CMOs

Artifical intelligence is set to transform the marketing and communications world even more than social media has, according to 55% of CMOs surveyed by Weber Shandwick across five markets. The agency's latest study examines current consumer knowledge and attitudes toward AI in the US, UK, Brazil, China and Canada. Of the 150 senior executives surveyed, 68% said their brand is currently selling, using or planning for business in the AI era. Moreover, nearly six in 10 believe that within the next five years, companies will need to compete in the AI space to succeed. Weber Shandwick also polled 2,100 consumers across the five markets, and found that Chinese consumers (31%) report having the strongest knowledge of AI, while UK consumers report the weakest (10%).

The entire 32 acre town has been to allow self driving car makers to test their vehicles in conditions as close as possible to the real world.
