In a world characterised by technology, where new advancements and innovations come to life every day, our capabilities have far exceeded what were once thought possible. When the first mobile phone call was made, when the first electric car was driven, and when the first remote surgery was performed -- the world was wowed, as it has been with every great "first" in the realm of technology. We are consistently amazed by what technology can do, and as time passes, the magnitude of its capabilities and the world's subsequent astonishment are heightened. And as society progresses, technology will only continue to redefine what is possible when innovation, resources, and initiative come together. With the recently launched UAE Artificial Intelligence Strategy, introduced by his highness Sheikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and the ruler of Dubai, the world will bear witness to a slew of new "firsts" -- technological developments conceived in one of the world's greatest innovation hubs which will make ripples across the globe.


Samsung makes record profit of $109m a day as chip demand soars

South Korean tech giant Samsung Electronics logged a record profit of 11.2trn won – $10bn (£7.6bn) – in the July to September period, it said on Tuesday, its best for any quarter. The world's biggest memory chip and smartphone maker had its de facto leader jailed in August for bribery and faced a recall of its flagship Galaxy Note 7 device. But its net profits soared 148% on the same period a year ago, it said in a statement, thanks to strong demand for its memory chips and a recovery in smartphone sales with the roll-out of the new generation Galaxy Note 8. The figures come only two weeks after chief executive Kwon Oh-Hyun resigned, saying the South's biggest firm was facing an "unprecedented crisis" and its current profitability was "merely a fruit of decisions and investment made in the past". The firm described Tuesday's numbers as an "overall robust performance".

Icelandic video game developer and publisher CCP Games has reportedly put its Newcastle office up for sale in the wake of its decision to terminate its virtual reality development efforts. On the other hand, its Atlanta office has been shut down. Icelandic business publication mbl.is was the first to report about CCP Games' unfortunate situation. According to the publication, the company's Newcastle office, which housed the developers who worked on "Eve: Valkyrie," is now up for sale. Meanwhile, CCP's Atlanta office, which housed the people who worked on "Sparc," is already closed.

But now, the advanced artificial intelligence robot -- which looks like Audrey Hepburn, mimics human expressions and may be the grandmother of robots that solve the world's most complex problems -- has a new feather in her cap: The kingdom of Saudi Arabia officially granted citizenship to the humanoid robot last week during a program at the Future Investment Initiative, a summit that links deep-pocketed Saudis with inventors hoping to shape the future. Sophia's recognition made international headlines -- and sparked an outcry against a country with a shoddy human rights record that has been accused of making women second-class citizens. "Thank you to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia," the country's newest citizen said. "It is historic to be the first robot in the world granted citizenship."


Neural Wikipedian: Generating Textual Summaries from Knowledge Base Triples

Most people do not interact with Semantic Web data directly. Unless they have the expertise to understand the underlying technology, they need textual or visual interfaces to help them make sense of it. We explore the problem of generating natural language summaries for Semantic Web data. This is non-trivial, especially in an open-domain context. To address this problem, we explore the use of neural networks. Our system encodes the information from a set of triples into a vector of fixed dimensionality and generates a textual summary by conditioning the output on the encoded vector. We train and evaluate our models on two corpora of loosely aligned Wikipedia snippets and DBpedia and Wikidata triples with promising results.

The makers of the world's first hoverbike have revealed plans for a self flying air taxi that seats five. Hoversurf, whose hoverbikes are used by police in Dubai, is launching a new product known as'The Formula Project'. It uses fold-away wings and 52 tiny turbine Venturi propulsion units - and its makers say experience is not necessary to navigate the skies. The Hoversurf drone taxi operates with'no human factor involved', and its wings fold up, allowing it to fit in a standard car park space. They also include 80-centimeter platforms and can be parked in regular parking spaces.


Weak, Brainless Quadruped Robot Autonomously Generates Gaits

Roboticists working on quadrupedal locomotion usually spend a lot of time developing control strategies to make their robots more robust and adaptable. The idea is that an advanced controller will let your robot do things on its own more effectively, such as choosing the proper gait for a given task or terrain. Researchers from Osaka University in Japan are experimenting with a different approach--relying on interactions between the body of a quadruped and its environment to generate gaits without any sensors or controllers or, really, much of anything besides some deliberately weak leg motors. The most remarkable point of this concept is that the mechanical passivity of a low-torque DC motor behaves as an oscillator model to generate gaits. The low-torque motor in each leg delays and adjusts the phases of the legs by exploiting only a purely physical mechanism: its own weakness.


Artificial Intelligence Program Predicts Cancer With 86 Percent Accuracy

An artificial intelligence program that scans thousands of human body cells was able to predict – with 86 percent accuracy – which would become cancerous. The Yokohama, Japan AI study was able to detect colorectal cancer before benign tumors were able to become malignant. The program took microscopic images of a colorectal polyp, magnified it by 500 times and then cross-referenced the variations with more than 30,000 images. The database of images contained both pre-cancerous and cancerous cells, and was the first cross-referencing image research of its kind, Inverse first reported. The AI-assisted system pulled off an impressive 86 percent prediction accuracy rate that was derived after assessing patients with a colorectal polyp diagnosis.
