3 skillsets that are "safe" with AI

#artificialintelligence

AI and machine learning are rising forms of innovative technology that can be used to automate mundane tasks within an organization and keep businesses productive. But in the future, they ultimately won't replace many of the skills that humans have today. In a nutshell, organizations need to be able to anticipate change, readjust their strategies and come up with creative ideas to motivate staff and market products - just to name a few. This article will take a deep dive into the following three skills: communication, creativity and flexibility, that are "safe" with AI and can work in tandem with the technology to improve business productivity, keep customers happy, and brainstorm new ideas to problem solve with clients, better market products and work better as a team to reach common goals and impact business. Several companies around the globe are competitively putting enough creativity and effort to fabricate unique skillsets that are "safe" with AI.

At least 16 companies developing Deep Learning chips NextBigFuture.com

@machinelearnbot

There are many established and startup companies developing deep learning chips. Google and Wave Computing have working silicon and are conducting customer trials. Chinese AI chip startup has received $100 million in funding. Cambricon Technologies aims to have one billion smart devices using its AI processor and own 30% of China's high-performance AI chip market in three years. Huawei estimates Cambricon chips are six times faster for deep-learning applications like training algorithms to identify images than a GPU.

Stephen Hawking: 'I fear AI may replace humans altogether'

And yet our world increasingly resembles a fictional one, accelerating towards a dystopian reality that few would have predicted just a few years ago. Despite science's inexorable march of progress - from the discovery of new cancer drugs to the development of quantum computation - extremist political movements and the wanton spread of falsehoods frustrate its dissemination. This opposition to scientific culture has real consequences: diseases once eradicated re-emerge as anti-vaccination beliefs spread; cataclysmic hurricanes batter entire cities as climate-change denial prevents global solutions; democratic elections are undermined by shadowy adversaries using digital technology. In March this year, the scientific community, beleaguered by the anti-science sentiment stoked by conservative populism, took to the streets, marching for science across cities around the world. But as science becomes politicised, should scientists become political?

'Developers should ramp up skills in AI-based solutions'

#artificialintelligence

There is a huge paucity of professionals with skills in deep learning, artificial intelligence, big data analytics and virtual reality that will be vital for the computing industry in the next few years, according to Vishal Dhupar, Managing Director, NVIDIA (South Asia), a part of the $7-billion US-based tech company NVIDIA. "Developers in many other countries are already strong in AI. India should not miss this opportunity, and developers should be strong in developing AI-based solutions for the world," he said. India has the second-largest population of developers with nearly 30 per cent of them having knowledge on Python, which is a rule-based programming. However, the next wave of programming based on AI will be in sectors such as automobiles, healthcare and retail, with each presenting an over-$1-trillion opportunity for developers, he added.

Bangalore-based startup first to compete Artificial Intelligence Facebook challenge

#artificialintelligence

A Bangalore-based startup is claimed to have become the first company in the world to successfully complete a difficult 20-part challenge in Artificial Intelligence created by Facebook in 2015. Using a unique approach, DataVal Analytics successfully completed all 20 tasks of the test, known as the (20) QA bAbi Tasks, with 100 per cent accuracy. The test, hosted by Facebook AI Research (FAIR), assesses the ability of AI-based programs to perform text understanding and reasoning. According to a media release, DataVal Analytics, which has its head office in Chicago but operations office in Bangalore, has been founded by veterans from the Indian Army – Lt Col Shashi Kiran (Veteran) and Lt Col Naveen Xavier (Veteran). The team is mentored by the leading entrepreneur, innovator, policy maker and development thinker, Sam Pitroda as chairman.

CatBoost: Yandex's machine learning algorithm is available free of charge

@machinelearnbot

Machine learning helps make decisions by analyzing data and can be used in many different areas, including music choice and facial recognition. Yandex, one of Russia's leading tech companies, has made its advanced machine learning algorithm, CatBoost, available free of charge for developers around the globe. "This is the first Russian machine learning technology that's an open source," said Mikhail Bilenko, Yandex's head of machine intelligence and research. What do cats have to do with this?

COMB announces a $77M fund to help AI startups enter China

#artificialintelligence

Artificial intelligence is a hot topic in the tech industry with China -- alongside the U.S. -- emerging as a key market for talent, innovation and companies. While many AI firms head to the U.S. or set up operations Stateside, China is a harder market to crack for overseas companies. That's where a new fund wants to help. China-based accelerator firm COMB is launching a €65 million ($77 million) fund aimed at helping promising international AI firms enter the Middle Kingdom. The fund, which was announced at Slush in Helsinki this week, is run by COMB and the Beijing Institute of Collaborative Innovation (BICI).

Supervised Hashing based on Energy Minimization

arXiv.org Machine Learning

Recently, supervised hashing methods have attracted much attention since they can optimize retrieval speed and storage cost while preserving semantic information. Because hashing codes learning is NP-hard, many methods resort to some form of relaxation technique. But the performance of these methods can easily deteriorate due to the relaxation. Luckily, many supervised hashing formulations can be viewed as energy functions, hence solving hashing codes is equivalent to learning marginals in the corresponding conditional random field (CRF). By minimizing the KL divergence between a fully factorized distribution and the Gibbs distribution of this CRF, a set of consistency equations can be obtained, but updating them in parallel may not yield a local optimum since the variational lower bound is not guaranteed to increase. In this paper, we use a linear approximation of the sigmoid function to convert these consistency equations to linear systems, which have a closed-form solution. By applying this novel technique to two classical hashing formulations KSH and SPLH, we obtain two new methods called EM (energy minimizing based)-KSH and EM-SPLH. Experimental results on three datasets show the superiority of our methods.
