According to the International Federation of Robotics, the number of industrial robots being supplied by 2020 will be around 521,000, marking an increase on 2016 of 71 percent. Of those supplied in 2016, the five countries that made the most robots accounted for 74 percent of the 294,000 total. Well ahead at least in terms of numbers was China, with 87 thousand units supplied.

Bengaluru: Indian enterprises have been quick to adopt artificial intelligence (AI) with nearly one in five organisations implementing it in some way, said an Intel India commissioned report undertaken by research firm IDC. By mid-2019, about seven in 10 firms are anticipated to deploy AI. IDC surveyed 194 Indian companies across four verticals -- telecom, media & technology (TMT); retail; banking, financial services, & insurance (BFSI) and healthcare. The report said nearly 75% of the firms surveyed anticipate benefits in business process efficiency and employee productivity with the use of AI, and 64% of the respondents believe that this technology can empower them in revenue augmentation through better targeting of offers and improved sales processes. Despite a higher propensity to adopt AI, firms believe they will face a shortage of skills to unlock the opportunities through AI. "We all talk about the opportunity that India presents for AI, but often the types of industries that will embrace AI, the challenges that AI can address, and the roadblocks in implementation, are vague. This research is a small step towards comprehending this knowledge, and enabling companies such as ours, shape strategy and move ahead in the right direction," said Prakash Mallya, managing director for sales and marketing at Intel India.

A key finding was that 9% of India's 600 million estimated workforce would be deployed in new jobs that do not exist today, while 37% would be in jobs that have radically changed skill sets.

Here's how Artificial Intelligence is going to change the way farming is done in the country. Right from sowing to harvesting and then to post-harvest help, the AI solutions promise informed inputs to farmers and other stakeholders in the ecosystem. The solutions are going to give them heads up on the likelihood of rain, outbreak of diseases or attack of pests and on soil health condition. The information gathered from the field using satellite images and sensors on balloons would be juxtaposed with historical weather and other agronomic data to generate customised data for a specific farmer on a specific crop. Microsoft has tied up with International Crops Research Institute for Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) to develop a system designed specially to suit the needs of farmers in countries like India, while IT major Tech Mahindra is planning to have a team of 1,000 employees to focus exclusive on its initiative for agriculture.

Robot investigators may start to be used in fraud cases

Robot investigators could be widely used in future to examine documents in complex cases, the head of the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) has suggested. David Green said he would like to see the possibility of employing artificial intelligence "carefully examined" after using technology to sift through a cache of 30 million documents disclosed by Rolls-Royce during a major investigation. He also said it was now "pretty clear" that his agency would continue as an independent body after the government dropped plans to have it taken into the National Crime Agency. The SFO director set out how the Rolls-Royce documents had been examined by a computer algorithm which had the ability to learn as it went along. The technology was trying to find legally privileged documents which could not be used in the case, but Mr Green suggested that in future similar methods could be used to identify useful evidence in investigations.

Speaking in Tokyo at the last stop on NVIDIA's seven-city GPU Technology Conference world tour, NVIDIA founder and CEO Jensen Huang demonstrated how the NVIDIA DRIVE platform provides this scalable architecture for autonomous driving. "The future is surely a software defined car," said Huang.
