Artificial Intelligence -- A Case for Strong Global Governance
Worrying about Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IOT) destroying human opportunity of wealth creation today is a lot like worrying about overpopulation that could occur in Iceland, once overpopulated countries start facing civil wars, apartheid and people have no other options left but to migrate, although the feasibility of both the events happening in the coming decades is relatively high, if a strong Governance Framework is not implemented globally. At the moment nine countries pose a serious threat to technological progress and human welfare in the coming 50 years 2018โ2068, these nine countries are expected to account for half of the world's projected population increase: Bangladesh, Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Uganda and the United States of America. Out of these nine, China, Brazil and the United States have a firm resolve to slow down the growth rate by adopting the best possible methods to do it. Others will have no other option but to plan a stark reduction in human population in the coming decades. The exponential population growth and seemingly drastic reduction of Earths finite resources along with the threat of war, might restrain AI from reaching a conclusion that AI cannot keep up its pace with growing human numbers, which are detrimental to AI and human existence itself. This population growth is not a direct product of increasing population but also directly proportional to improved survival rate, lower child mortality rate and rapid improvements in the field of medicine.
Convergence Analysis of Distributed Inference with Vector-Valued Gaussian Belief Propagation

This paper considers inference over distributed linear Gaussian models using factor graphs and Gaussian belief propagation (BP). The distributed inference algorithm involves only local computation of the information matrix and of the mean vector, and message passing between neighbors. Under broad conditions, it is shown that the message information matrix converges to a unique positive definite limit matrix for arbitrary positive semidefinite initialization, and it approaches an arbitrarily small neighborhood of this limit matrix at a doubly exponential rate. A necessary and sufficient convergence condition for the belief mean vector to converge to the optimal centralized estimator is provided under the assumption that the message information matrix is initialized as a positive semidefinite matrix. Further, it is shown that Gaussian BP always converges when the underlying factor graph is given by the union of a forest and a single loop. The proposed convergence condition in the setup of distributed linear Gaussian models is shown to be strictly weaker than other existing convergence conditions and requirements, including the Gaussian Markov random field based walk-summability condition, and applicable to a large class of scenarios.
2 Billion Jobs to Disappear by 2030
Yesterday I was honored to be one of the featured speakers at the TEDxReset Conference in Istanbul, Turkey where I predicted that over 2 billion jobs will disappear by 2030. Since my 18-minute talk was about the rapidly shifting nature of colleges and higher education, I didn't have time to explain how and why so many jobs would be going away. An airline perspective on social media and AI in 2017 and the coming year
KLM has been at the forefront of new tech and social developments in the airline industry in 2017. The company just announced that its AI integration, supported by Digital Genius, has yielded excellent results in terms of improving responsiveness, without sacrificing the personal touch that forms a core part of the friendly KLM brand. As Vogel-Meijer explains, introducing AI was a necessary step to managing customer contacts, especially during times of travel disruption. However, KLM wanted to avoid inefficient automation which leads customers into an endless Q&A that never yields the right answers, so the machine learning capabilities of the AI interface were critical. "That was how started looking into artificial intelligence and we came across the path of DigitalGenius. The offer an algorithm implemented into Salesforce--our CRM system. It gives the agent a proposed answer to a question, based on what the algorithm has found on previous Q&A. Whenever the agent gets an answer, the agent can say this is great and send it out immediately or say it is not completely correct, and change it slightly. When they correct it, the algorithm learns and the system gets smarter. "We've been using it for one and a half years this week we are now able to optimize the first answers to specific questions.
Go player to take on Chinese AI in match
The world's top Go player will take on an artificial intelligence opponent again this spring, but this time it will not be Google's DeepMind that provides the machine rival. Ke Jie had previously vowed never to play against AI again after repeatedly losing to DeepMind's AlphaGo. But according to Chinese media reports, he will take on a range AI opponents, including one from China's Tencent. The man-versus-machine series will take place in China in April 2018. The matches will form part of the the World AI Go Tournament.

WeDoSky's Drone Data Science solutions that lets geographical area that needs to be monitored, has raised funding from Mumbai Angels after bootstrapping for over 2 years. WeDoSky is a data science company focused on generating actionable business insights using drone imagery, to assist various industries like mining, construction, energy & solar. The data extraction and analysis is done using their proprietary software'visualAI'. WeDoSky counts titans like Adani Enterprises, Tata Power, Azure Power, and ACC Cement amongst its many clients. The company was founded 2014.
Human Go champion backtracks on vow to never face an AI opponent again
Back in May, AlphaGo from Google, an AI algorithm that is part of DeepMind, defeated the human world champion Ke Jie in a three-part match. After it was over, Jie vowed never to play a computer again. But apparently something has changed his mind because Chinese news sources report that Jie will once again play an artificial intelligence at an AI tournament to be held in China in April 2018. Ke Jie is one of the tournament's ambassadors, and he will play against the AI Tianrang. Normally, a human representative places pieces on behalf of the AI, but in this case, a robotic arm developed by Fuzhou University will fulfill that role.
IoT and AI innovate construction and mining
At the event, Nvidia announced a partnership with Japan's Komatsu Ltd., one of the world's largest makers of construction and mining equipment. Nvidia GPUs will be embedded into heavy machinery to help the industry improve safety and increase productivity. One of the biggest problems in construction and mining is that large equipment moving around people leads to many accidents. In fact, the Bureau of Labor and Statistics estimated that more than 10,000 injuries occur annually because of construction vehicle and machine accidents, costing companies millions of dollars in lost productivity. According to the Japan Construction Occupational Safety and Health Association, there were more than 300 deaths and 15,000 injuries at construction sites in Japan last year alone.
