Airports turn to Artificial Intelligence to find the dangers within
Regional airports are ramping up their internal security measures as they say the most dangerous threats in today's aviation world come from within. Artificial intelligence will play a major role in staff clearance in cities like Dubai and Jeddah in the coming years as it will ensure swift analysis and predictions of potential criminal or terrorist behaviour, a security forum heard on Monday. "The concept of security has completely changed," said Farah Al Ansari, head of airport security at Dubai International Airport. "The threats used to be in restricted areas but now they've moved and affect people and government as they're more spread, like what happened in Brussels and Ataturk Airport in Istanbul, so we're upgrading our systems to be in line with modern technologies." The airport is currently working on staff entrance to ensure greater control by introducing biometrics, more advanced face recognition and artificial intelligence, as opposed to only CCTV cameras and police monitoring now.

Erica, A Japanese Robot, Will Start Her News Anchor Career In April
Erica, a 23-year-old Japanese robot, is all set to make her debut as a news anchor in April 2018. The robot, which looks remarkably like a young woman, was created by Hiroshi Ishiguro, the director of the Intelligent Robotics Laboratory at Osaka University, in 2014. In a documentary conducted by the Guardian on Erica in December, Ishiguro described his creation as "the most beautiful and most human-like autonomous android in this world." However, there is still a long way to go before Erica can move and walk around like a human. At the moment, the robot's arms and legs are not functional.
Google Brain co-founder raises $175 million fund for AI startups
Ng announced Tuesday that he raised money from venture capital firms New Enterprise Associates, Sequoia Capital and Greylock Partners as well as SoftBank Group Corp. In an interview with Reuters, Ng said his goal was to identify new business ideas around artificial intelligence and be able to put cash into them quickly from the so-called AI Fund, of which he will serve as general partner, so that founders of the portfolio companies will not need to burn time pitching traditional venture capitalists. Ng said he plans to draw on his experience at Baidu, one of China's largest internet companies, where he led the artificial intelligence team to develop a range of new business lines. Under Ng, Baidu released a voice-based operating system that users can talk to - much like Amazon's Alexa voice assistant or Apple's Siri - and also started working on self-driving cars and face recognition technology to open things like transit turnstiles when users approach. "Based on that experience, I have an unusual point of view on the building of AI businesses. I think it's a more systematic, repeatable process than most people think," said Ng, who also taught artificial intelligence courses at Stanford University.

The idea of Shapecrunch was born around three years ago when one of the company's Co-founders, Nitin Gandhi, who suffers from a flat foot, had difficulties getting a pair of custom orthotics. "I went to the doctor and he told me to get a pair of custom orthotics. Then I went to a shop to get those made and was surprised to see the manual process. All the machines were imported and the orthotics that I finally got had to be replaced because they were uncomfortable. Then again I had to go there," Nitin recalls.
Economic Survey 2018: India should leverage artificial intelligence, blockchain for future growth
India has the potential to be a global leader if it makes the right investments now in the technologies of the future including artificial intelligence, machine learning and blockchain, the Economic Survey 2017-18 said on Monday. Calling for greater focus and investment on R&D in science and technology, the Survey suggested a mission-driven approach that could have a huge impact on Indian society and growth. It suggested six key areas that can be taken up as national missions to promote India's R&D capabilities. One of these is the National Mission on Cyber Physical Systems. "This is hugely multidisciplinary area including deep mathematics used in artificial intelligence, machine learning, big data analytics, block chains, expert systems, contextual learning going to integration of all of these with intelligent materials and machines, control systems, sensors and actuators, robotics and smart manufacturing," the Survey noted.

Didi is becoming big in big data and, according to latest announcements, their new project is set to change how cities look at mobility. The Chinese ride-hailing giant has just launched the "Didi Smart Transportation Brain," a solution that brings data from government and other partners to develop a city traffic management powered by AI and cloud technology. What the Brain is solving is not just traffic jams, it's a huge city-sized puzzle. The project has been in development for around a year now, piloting in over 20 Chinese cities. It's a multidisciplinary endeavor: it includes analyzing data from video cameras, sensors and GPS signals from Didi's cars, installing intelligent traffic lights, working with local traffic police and city planners.
