Artificial intelligence is already everywhere, so it's inevitable that it would invade the arts. Yahama showed a new kind of AI tech that translated the movements of renowned dancer Kaiji Moriyama into musical notes on a piano, "a form of expression that fuses body movements and music," the company said. He used it during a concert in Tokyo entitled Mai Hi Ten Yu, dancing and "playing" the piano with his body, accompanied by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra Scharoun Ensemble. Yamaha's system ensures that the dancer plays music that makes some sense, rather than just random notes. Moriyama carried four types of sensors on his back, wrists and feet that translated his movements into data.

Chinese chips could catch up and even stand out in the current Artificial Intelligence (AI) boom, according to a news report published in a U.S. technology magazine Wednesday. In the current wave of enthusiasm for hardware optimized for AI, China's semiconductor industry sees a unique opportunity to establish itself, said the report published by MIT Technology Review, a magazine founded by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The article cites Chinese chip "Thinker" as an example. Designed to support neural networks, "Thinker" could recognize objects in images and understand human speech. What makes the chip stand out is its ability to "dynamically tailor its computing and memory requirements to meet the needs of the software being run."

Nintendo Switch overtakes the Wii U
The Nintendo Switch games console has outsold its predecessor, just 10 months after its launch. Nintendo sold 7.23 million Switch consoles in the previous quarter, bringing total sales to about 14.86 million devices. The Wii U, which went on sale in November 2012, sold 13.56 million units before it was discontinued in 2017 and was considered a commercial failure. Nintendo reported its most profitable quarter since 2009. The company announced an operating profit of 116.50 billion yen (£755m, $1.07 billion), up from 32.26 billion yen a year ago.

Alibaba is reshaping city traffic with artificial intelligence
Alibaba, China's largest online retailer, is deploying its cloud-computing power to save Asia's cities from their suffocating traffic. Its subsidiary AliCloud announced today (Jan. The company deployed its traffic-management system, called City Brain, in Hangzhou, China--where Alibaba is headquartered--in September 2016. Afterwards, average traffic speed increased 15%, and traffic violations were reported with 92% accuracy Reuters reports. City Brain makes live traffic predictions, optimizes traffic flow, and detects traffic incidents using data from video footage, traffic bureaus, public transportation systems, and mapping apps.
