Sara Thornton, the chair of the National Police Chiefs' Council, said the volume of date held by individuals had massively increased the number of potential lines of enquiry that officers must pursue to understand a case. Her views have, however, been questioned by a leading expert in counter-terrorism and organised crime who insists the police have already had the ability to comb through large volumes of digital data under the Criminal Procedure and Investigations Act 1996. In an exclusive interview, David Vidicette, now the author of several crime thriller books including The Theseus Paradox, said this has always been standard procedure and normal police and detective work.

While robot skiers are taking to the slopes alongside humans in Pyeongchang, an Olympics partner is readying artificial intelligence judges for the next summer games in Tokyo. Japanese company Fujitsu is developing software that uses data from 3D sensors to analyze gymnastics events like the pommel horse and floor routines, according to a video released by the company last year. Fujistu is reportedly introducing this technology at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. To create the judging software, Fujitsu first captured 3D data of professional gymnasts' performances in 2016, in an effort to create a "bone structure model" for athletes. This allows the company to understand and digitally simulate the exact position of each gymnast, which is then compared to international gymnastics committees' standards.

Police in China have have a new weapon with which to fight crime and capture criminals. Surveillance in China means the authorities know pretty much everything about you whenever you appear on camera. Now police there have a new weapon with which to fight crime and capture criminals: high-tech glasses that allow for facial recognition at the push of a button. As the Hong Kong Free Press reports, in the city of Zhengzhou, four police officers have started wearing these glasses when patrolling the city's east station. There is a camera mounted above the left eye and the glasses are linked to a smartphone-like handheld device.
Officials: US drone strike kills 7 in Pakistani tribal area
DERA ISMAIL KHAN, Pakistan โ Pakistani intelligence officials say a U.S. drone strike has hit a militant compound in a northwestern tribal region near the Afghan border, killing seven militants from the Taliban-affiliated Haqqani network. The officials Friday said the strike took place a day earlier in the border village of Gorwak in North Waziristan, once a stronghold of local and foreign militants until the military cleared them out. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak to the media. They said the target of Thursday's strike was the Haqqani network. Confirmation of the strike came shortly before Afghanistan Deputy Foreign Minister Hekmat Khalil Karzai arrived in Islamabad for talks with Pakistani officials.

A new ITU Focus Group will propose standardization strategies to assist Machine Learning in contributing to the efficiency of emerging IMT-2020 (5G) systems. The group will define the requirements of Machine Learning as they relate to technology, data formats and network architectures. Contributions to the first meeting of the Focus Group in Geneva, 30 January to 2 February 2018, discussed 5G systems' significant gains in complexity over 4G systems, highlighting potential for Machine Learning to make reliable predictions; support robust, efficient network operations; and increase the feasibility of network self-organization. WG'Use cases, services & requirements' will document promising use cases of Machine Learning and describe their surrounding technological ecosystem. The study will identify the requirements of these use cases and bring greater clarity to the ICT industry's vision for Machine Learning's contribution to 5G systems.

The problem is such that a couple of crowdsourcing projects have emerged to try to stamp out the problem. One of the pioneers emerged in India. The project, called I Paid a Bribe, asks citizens to share instances where they have been forced to bribe officials to achieve outcomes that should not require such greasing of the wheels. The site allows you to report your experience in full detail, including where it happened, the service you were seeking, how much you paid, and the person who bribed you.
AI-enabled scooter eyes the mass market
A small Manesar-based startup is adding intelligence to the plain old scooter as it tries to make its mark in a crowded two-wheeler market. Flow, the new electric scooter by Twenty-Two Motors, will be a connected smart scooter with the ability to tell you how well you're riding your scooter, when parts will fail before they actually do, and will be equipped with wireless charging capability. The scooter will also have the cruise control feature, typically found in high-end cars. Priced at Rs 74,740, production of the Flow scooter will start in June at the company's upcoming factory at Bhiwadi, Rajasthan. Twenty-Two started taking pre-orders for the scooter at the Auto Expo on Thursday.
