HPC and AI – Two Communities Same Future

What this means is that users of the future will program using models that leverage each other and that interact through memory.

Some 85 robots (spread across 11 different models, humanoid and otherwise) have been serving drinks, cleaning floors, swimming around fish tanks, guiding lost visitors at the airport and even skiing according to regional publication Korea JoongAng Daily. "We applied three yardsticks in choosing the robots to use at The Games -- how stable, new and useful they are going to be," Park Hyun-Sub, of the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology said. The robot skiing competition was held yesterday at an event adjacent to the Olympic village. According to The Guardian, each bot had to meet a strict set of criteria to compete.

Oracle Cloud Services Double Down on Machine Learning

Oracle is boosting its cloud platform with 12 new global regions and autonomous capabilities as it tries to regain ground following a disappointing quarter for Oracle cloud services and continues to lag behind Microsoft and Amazon Web Services. At its CloudWorld event in New York on Monday, Oracle president Mark Hurd said that enterprises are not going to want to bring the same level of complication as their on-premise infrastructure to the cloud, and that automation is going to help them simplify their IT investments by cutting down on labor costs and driving efficiency, following a broader trend among cloud services vendors who are using machine learning to capture more customers. Oracle executives were brought on stage throughout the keynote to demonstrate new capabilities in Oracle cloud services centered around automation, including expansion of its Oracle Cloud Platform Autonomous Services beyond the Oracle Autonomous Database, which Oracle's Larry Ellison spoke about in September. He said the self-healing database, which automates patching cycles, could prevent companies from being the next Equifax. Oracle will expand on this offering with multiple autonomous services in 2018, including Oracle Autonomous Data Warehouse Cloud Service for analytics, Oracle Autonomous Database OLTP for transactional and mixed workloads, and Oracle Autonomous NoSQL Database.

That's according to Ipswich-based'futurist' Ian Pearson who claims that people will need to merge with machines in order to survive. 'The fact is that AI can go further than humans, it could be billions of times smarter than humans at this point,' Pearson said. Chinese police add facial recognition glasses to their surveillance arsenal

Police officers in Zhengzhou, China have been spotted wearing sunglasses equipped with facial recognition software that allows them to identify individuals in a crowd. These surveillance sunglasses were actually rolled out last year, but a recent report from China's QQ published a series of photos of the glasses in action. China has consistently been ahead of the curve in terms of utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) for surveillance. The country's CCTV system tracked down a BBC reporter in just seven minutes during a demonstration in 2017.


Gartner Says Nearly Half of CIOs Are Planning to Deploy Artificial Intelligence

Meaningful artificial intelligence (AI) deployments are just beginning to take place, according to Gartner, Inc. Gartner's 2018 CIO Agenda Survey shows that four percent of CIOs have implemented AI, while a further 46 percent have developed plans to do so. "Despite huge levels of interest in AI technologies, current implementations remain at quite low levels," said Whit Andrews, research vice president and distinguished analyst at Gartner. "However, there is potential for strong growth as CIOs begin piloting AI programs through a combination of buy, build and outsource efforts." As with most emerging or unfamiliar technologies, early adopters are facing many obstacles to the progress of AI in their organizations. Gartner analysts have identified the following four lessons that have emerged from these early AI projects.
