I joined the Star Wars fandom late in the game. I grew up in India, where Star Wars is less of a thing, but in 2015 I watched "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" and set out on a quest to watch everything. They can move and talk (though mostly in gibberish) and act intelligently. As we all know, technology is often inspired by movies. So, imagine you have this brand new car and you go for a regular (annual) checkup, as indicated by your on board computer. You arrive and they tell you they will check oil, water, air pressure and inspect for visibly hints to corrosion only, since this hightech stuff is too cost intensive. I would want to see your face! Well, now you go for your personal annual health checkup; some blood, urine will be analyzed for app.

Today, top individuals from around the world convened at the World Government Summit to discuss the agenda that should govern the next generation of governments. Yesterday, a select few of these leaders gathered in a closed-door meeting to discuss the guidelines that nations should use as they help their people come to terms with no longer being the only sentient species on the planet. Of course, this was just one of the many topics discussed. Officials also deliberated on the most immediate ways they can implement AI technologies to make our lives better, who should govern AI, and how to best navigate the perilous roads ahead. The event was organized by the AI Initiative from the Future Society at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government and H.E. Omar bin Sultan Al Olama, the UAE's Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence.

A new app has been developed that connects blind and partially sighted people with "remote operators" to guide them through day-to-day tasks. The revolutionary mobile tech claims to give people the power of sight by connecting them via a camera to a remote sighted agent who can describe what is going on around them. A camera that is mounted to advanced wireless glasses is hooked up to a distributed network of trained human professionals who can help visually impaired people accomplish any task, big or small. Whether that is simply buying a greeting card or running a marathon, the new tech has transformed lives. The project is part of a campaign called #CaseForChange, which tells powerful stories of human change, all backed by mobile connectivity.

WASHINGTON – Two astronauts from Japan and the United States went on a spacewalk Friday to repair the International Space Station's robotic arm and put equipment in storage. The spacewalk was the first for Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) astronaut Norishige Kanai and the fourth for his U.S. counterpart Mark Vande Hei. The outing began at 7 a.m. when the duo switched their spacesuits to battery power before venturing into the vacuum of space. The excursion was expected to last 6½ hours. Kanai, 41, is a doctor and diver who goes by the nickname "Neemo."

Are China's ambitions to "lead the world" in artificial intelligence (AI) by 2030 credible? China's rapid emergence as an AI powerhouse is often hyped and sensationalized, variously provoking alarm and enthusiasm that can sometimes overshadow the reality of real progress. Apple is rolling out a fix to a problem that means iPhones, iPads and other devices can crash if they receive just one letter. A bug in its operating systems – iOS 11, the latest version of macOS, and the software for its Watch and TV box – means that if it receives a single letter in Indian language Telegu the device will crash. If anyone sends the character and it's opened in a messaging app, the phone will crash. It affects not only Apple's own iMessage but other apps running on iPhones, like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger. The health ministry on Friday approved an outline for raising the optional age for tapping public pensions to 71 or older to address the national labor shortage stemming from Japan's falling birthrate and rapidly graying population. The ministry will consider revising the related laws in fiscal 2020 to encourage people in their 60s or older to continue working. The ministry's outline notes that older adults are physically healthier than previous generations and are highly motivated to continue working or participate in community activities. In addition, the outline says the government will review the "standardization of life stages according to age categories." "Depopulation in rural areas is expected as the pace of aging picks up. It is important to realize a society where people of all generations can widely and actively participate," Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said during a meeting on the issue Friday.

Two years ago, Gal Salomon's mother developed sepsis during a stay in the hospital. "It was a big hospital with a lot of patients and no one saw or understood it was happening," Salomon recalls bitterly. "We lost her after two days." Clew develops software that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to predict which patients in a hospital's intensive care unit (ICU) are at the highest risk of imminent deterioration, and it alerts staff so they can intervene early.
