Who says the Chinese don't care about privacy?

As artificial intelligence (AI) and big data technologies become more prevalent, a survey has found that three out of four people in China are worried about the threat that AI poses to their privacy, challenging the popular notion that the Chinese care little about giving up personal data. State broadcaster China Central Television (CCTV) and Tencent Research surveyed 8.000 respondents on their attitudes toward AI as part of CCTV's China Economic Life Survey. The results show that 76.3 per cent see certain forms of AI as a threat to their privacy, even as they believe that AI holds much development potential and will permeate different industries. About half of the respondents said that they believe AI is already affecting their work life, while about a third see AI as a threat to their jobs. Anxiety has risen over how intrusive AI will be and if they will steal jobs away from humans as companies increasingly deploy the technology, from recommending videos and songs to replacing cashiers with facial recognition and mobile payments.


UAE Cabinet forms Artificial Intelligence Council

The UAE Cabinet has formed a council for artificial intelligence (AI) that will oversee AI integration in government departments and the education sector. The ten-member UAE Council for Artificial Intelligence will be chaired by Omar Al Olama, the 27-year-old who was appointed Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence in October's Cabinet reshuffle. The council includes representatives from every emirate. The council will identify how and where AI can be incorporated in government, what supporting infrastructure it requires and investigate its incorporation at different levels of education. The formation of the AI council was one of five themes outlined in the government's AI strategy launched last October.

As one Japanese convenience store pursues an expansion, it may be getting some non-human help to decide where its stores should go. Convenience store chain Lawson is considering using artificial intelligence (AI) to determine where to place its new store locations, according to the Japan Times. The chain plans to use AI to collect marketing data, such as household distribution patterns and traffic volume, to determine a given store's chances of success in an area. Generally, the chain makes such decisions based on information gathering and analysis of an area carried out by staff.

Those calls for an ambulance have been revealed by local newspaper the San Francisco Chronicle, and which describe one employee smashing into the glass so hard that he was expected to need stitches. The new Apple campus in Cupertino was built to be "the best office building in the world", according to Steve Jobs, who championed the building as one of his last acts as Apple's boss. He heralded how the office would be a picture of modern perfection, full of sweeping glass โ€“ including panes that are among the biggest pieces of glass ever used in such a building.

Opportunity for India to leap ahead of others in AI capabilities

NEW DELHI: India has an opportunity to create a locally designed Artificial Intelligence plan that would work for its needs and help nurture world-dominating companies specialising in this emerging field, say experts. So far, the country is seen as lagging behind the US and China in building capabilities in AI due to the lack of large internet companies that harness data of users. However, growing investments across sectors in building data-based businesses and the recognition by the government to create enabling policies for AI is throwing up opportunity for entrepreneurs. "India could have a very large role to play, all the pieces are in place, it has a great opportunity, and is upto India to either succeed or fail," Andrew NG, one of the most prominent experts of AI told ET. NG, who was the cofounder of Google Brain and is the founder of online learning platform Coursera added that he gets pitch notes from Indian startups.
