Fukushima professor develops rubber that can make and store power from light, vibration
Kunio Shimada, a professor of fluid mechanics and energy engineering at Fukushima University, has developed a special rubber that can generate electricity from solar and kinetic energy and save the power generated. The 53-year-old professor, who is from the city of Fukushima, says the rubber is the first of its kind in the world and is trying to patent it in Japan. His discovery could be used to develop artificial skin for robots or shock-resistant solar batteries. Robotics experts have already shown interest in Shimada's technology, which could become part of the prefecture's new initiative aimed at promoting robotics. Shimada has a track record in the field of conductive rubber.

Memory demand boosted by AI and industrial Internet - SHINE
New technologies including artificial intelligence and industrial Internet, instead of personal computers, will become major catalysts to boost demand of "next generation" memory and storage chips in the next decade, said Micron, the world's third-biggest memory firm, today. Devices like vehicles with autonomous features, monitors with intelligent storage and analysis features and various new IoT (Internet of Things) devices will require huge volume of data, which is expected to fuel memory market, said Kris Baxter, vice president of marketing of Micron's embedded business unit. "Data is the new currency. It requires next generation memory," Baxter said in an interview during the Shanghai International IT & Electronic Fair. Mobile and social networks have become fast-growing sectors on memory, which fueled the memory chip market to US$13.5 billion in 2017, 57 percent growth year-on-year.

Simply put, when artificial intelligence is trained with biased data, it can make biased decisions. By way of example, facial recognition systems from IBM and Microsoft were recently shown to have struggled to properly recognize black women, while software used to help courts predict criminality has skewed towards black men. An experiment by Carnegie Mellon university also showed back in 2015 that "significantly fewer" women were being shown online ads for jobs paying more than $200,000. All of these systems were powered by machine-learning, which to most people would appear to be at the cutting edge of technology.

Vandana Singh knows the universe is strange--she's a physics professor. She's also a science fiction author who uses the knowledge gleaned from her day job to write stories as bizarre as the universe itself. "She's thinking about this idea that perhaps the world is not finished, the universe is not finished," Singh says. "So the more you observe, and the more consistent your theory is, the more reality will mold or mutate to be that way.
