Free Russian app Gero can tell you when you'll die

Predicting death has long been a fascination for mankind, and now a new app promises to narrow the end of your life down to the nearest 36.5 days. Experts in Russia designed a free app dubbed Gero, which uses AI to analyse activity data from your phone accelerometer to estimate your lifespan within a tenth of a year. When combined with information recorded by wearable fitness monitors, this prediction becomes even more precise. The estimate will even be revised downwards if you don't keep up with your healthy living routines, hopefully adding an incentive to stick to them. Exactly when we shuffle off this mortal coil has long been a fascination for mankind and a new app promises to narrow this down to the nearest 36.5 days.

Behind her bright green eyes and soft, glowing skin--made from something called "frubber"--lies an armature of microchips, sensors, and other gadgetry that allow her to blink, smile, and pose for di Sturco's camera. "At first glance you don't know if she's human or not," di Sturco says, "but then you see the details, the brain." Cryptocurrency and artificial intelligence technologies took center stage this week at Slush Tokyo, one of the nation's largest tech conferences and an annual event that brings together startups, investors and more established businesses. This year's conference featured many speakers, panel discussions and startups moving into the rapidly growing world of cryptocurrency and AI. Cryptocurrencies, or virtual currencies, can usually be traded without the intermediation of a central authority, with the most famous being bitcoin. But the underlying technology has spawned a number of other similar virtual currencies and other new funding mechanisms. "This is the fourth time we had the event," said Antti Sonninen, CEO of Slush Tokyo.

So, what better way to get ready for the World Cup than by practicing in a project that combines these two hot topics? In order to do that, we're going to leverage a dataset of the Fifa 2018 video game. My goal is to show you how to create a predictive model that is able to forecast how good a soccer player is based on their game statistics (using Python in a Jupyter Notebook).

It is hard to imagine a more scathing indictment of our ability to read another's thoughts and intentions than our inability to predict Donald Trump's next move. From the gross pre-election misjudgments to postelection bafflement, the best pundits are at a loss to accurately anticipate his response to matters like North Korean military aggressiveness or his moment-by-moment political gyrations and opinion reversals. Labeling Trump a narcissist, psychopath, megalomaniac or attention-impaired, or all of the above, might feel explanatory, but even when armed with the best psychoanalytic insights, we have no idea what he will do when presented with a new or unforeseen circumstance. If conventional psychology isn't up to the task, perhaps we should step back and consider a tantalizing sci-fi alternative -- that Trump doesn't operate within conventional human cognitive constraints, but rather is a new life form, a rudimentary artificial intelligence-based learning machine. When we strip away all moral, ethical and ideological considerations from his decisions and see them strictly in the light of machine learning, his behavior makes perfect sense. Consider how deep learning occurs in neural networks such as Google's Deep Mind or IBM's Deep Blue and Watson.

In humans, the profound biological differences that exist between the sexes mean that a single male is physically capable of having far more children than is a single female. Women carry unborn children for nine months and often nurse them for several years prior to having additional children.1 Men, meanwhile, are able to procreate while investing far less time in the bearing and early rearing of each child. So it is that, as measured by the contribution to the next generation, powerful men have the potential to have a far greater impact than powerful women, and we can see this in genetic data. The great variability among males in the number of offspring produced means that by searching for genomic signatures of past variability in the number of children men have had, we can obtain genetic insights into the degree of social inequality in society as a whole, and not just between males and females. An extraordinary example of this is provided by the inequality in the number of male offspring that seems to have characterized the empire established by Genghis Khan, who ruled lands stretching from China to the Caspian Sea. After his death in 1227, his successors, including several of his sons and grandsons, extended the Mongol Empire even farther--to Korea in the east, to central Europe in the west, and to Tibet in the south.

Microsoft to make artificial intelligence 'available to all'

Artificial intelligence (AI) is no longer going to remain the secret sauce of giant tech companies. Microsoft said that it was betting big on'democratising' artificial intelligence and making it'available to all' to help improve lives and transform businesses. Detecting deadly diseases, reducing accident risks, predicting consumer behaviour and helping farmers increase crop yields were some of the AI-based innovations that the world's largest software maker showcased along with its partners at an event here.
