A new report from the OECD โ the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development โ looked at the extent to which jobs may soon be automated in 32 different countries, and found that 66 million people are at risk of losing their job to machines. That means 14% of jobs currently held by humans could soon be managed by robots. The level of risk varies from industry to industry and country to country, but in the UK about 10% of jobs are considered at high risk. However, the results are a lot more positive when compared with previous studies, some of which estimated the percentage of jobs susceptible to automation could be as high as 47%. So what happens when a person loses their job to a machine? Who is most at risk of being replaced by a robot?

5G and smart vehicles are set to drive growth in Japan next, analyst says
The development of 5G mobile networks, as well as smart vehicles, will be among the next hot sectors in Japan, a senior equity analyst told CNBC. Previously, the information technology industry in Japan was driven by products such as digital cameras and smartphones, but it has now reached a plateau, Kazunori Ito, senior equity analyst at Ibbotson Associates Japan, said last month. "From here, I would observe many of the growth opportunities are non-IT industries, such as autos, and many other industries driven by the diffusion of 5G," he told CNBC's "Capital Connection." Ito said his top Japanese stock picks are smartphone component maker Murata Manufacturing and electronics company TDK. Major specifications for a new 5G mobile network are expected to be set by the industry this December, he said.

I grew up in a plattenbau neighborhood, in a micro-district inspired by Le Corbusier. It is fashionable to despise this architectural style, but I must admit that I secretly love factory-built assembled plattenbau projects. The thing is, I love them on the design sketches, on maquette miniatures, I love them in the imagination of their architects, I love them on 70s postcards of an idyllic, innocent urban landscapes of heartland's France towns social housing developments (which we know ended up eventually converting into ethnic ghettos and welfare-subsidised slums). They say mass-production buildings and vast spaces create ghettos. They blame Le Corbusier for their misery.
Any Hope for Cyber Deterrence Goes Out the Window with AI
Despite these ongoing discussions, governments seem more and more inclined to continue to invest time, effort, and money in developing cyber capabilities, less concerned about trying to deter hostile activities and more concerned about being able to dominate them. Indeed, much of the publicized comments by senior officials from leading cyber powers demonstrates less concern about defending against attacks and more about being able to execute them. Such a focus makes trying to dissuade hostile actors a nominal token at best, hoping that the sheer volume of cyber fire power may be enough to deter nefarious state cyber activity. In late February 2018, Admiral Rogers โ the head of the National Security Agency and U.S. Cyber Command โ testified before Congress that the President had not give him specific orders or authority to strike back at Russian cyber operations at their source ahead of the midterm elections. Presumably the intimation was that in the sake of guarding itself, Cyber Command would initiate offensive attacks intent on changing the calculus and behavior of these Russian operations.
"Killer robot" fears prompt AI experts to boycott South Korean university
More than 50 AI experts have boycotted a South Korean university, over fears that it could be looking to "accelerate the arms race" by building so-called "killer robots". The Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) recently announced the launch of a "Research Center for the Convergence of National Defense and Artificial Intelligence", in partnership with arms company Hanwha Systems. The move suggested that KAIST, which came in 46th place in QS' 2018 rankings of the best universities in the world, was planning to help the arms firm build artificial intelligence-enhanced weapons that could be used by the military. Over 50 AI and robotics researchers have now signed an open letter, calling for the boycott of KAIST. "At a time when the United Nations is discussing how to contain the threat posed to international security by autonomous weapons, it is regrettable that a prestigious institution like KAIST looks to accelerate the arms race to develop such weapons," it reads.
Artificial Intelligence reports of MEITY panels by month-end
NEW DELHI: The four committees set up by the ministry of electronics and IT (MEITY) to deliberate on the various aspects of Artificial Intelligence (AI) are expected to publish the report of their findings by end of this month. The government had constituted four committees in February this year with the aim of understanding various regulatory and technical challenges associated with AI along with areas where the technology could be implemented. The committees have a representation from the government, academia, companies such as Google and Microsoft along with industry bodies such as Nasscom. While the committee on platforms and data for AI is headed by Professor PP Chakraborty of IIT Kharagpur, the one for leveraging AI for identifying national missions in key sectors has Professor Rajeev Sangal of IIT-BHU as its chairman. Executives such as Anant Maheshwari, president of Microsoft India, Gautam Shroff, head of research of Tata Consultancy Services and Ganesh Mahabala of Nvidia and Sanjay Sinha, India/ South Asia Leader for Watson Data & AI Platforms at IBM are some of the top industry representatives to be part of these committees.

I've given a few runs of my presentation on Driverless Cars in #Australia, #Malaysia and #NewZealand. One thing I've noticed is how engaged and excited the audience become when they see a #Tesla Model S, driving itself for the first time. So, what I wanted to achieve in this blog, is to share with you some of this magic and to show you some of the graphics and features I present to the audience. The key to the driverless car is the Tesla Enhanced Autopilot system which provides a number of different automatic features. Basically, new features are added as software upgrades, with the Autopilot hardware already set to support years of automation ahead.
