Element AI global talent report finds Canada has third-largest concentration of AI researchers
Montreal-based Element AI has compiled a report and analysis on the global supply of AI researchers in an effort to get a better understanding of an industry in high demand. Overall, the report found that there are 22,064 PhD-educated researchers globally that are capable of working in AI research and applications, with only 3,074 candidates currently looking for work. The US had the highest concentration of researchers with 9,010 researchers, followed by the UK with 1,861 researchers. Canada fell in third place with 1,154 researchers. To conduct the broader survey, Element AI used results from LinkedIn searches that showed the total number of profiles according to specialized parameters.

Leading AI experts speak out about Korean university's new 'killer robots' WRAL TechWire
Artificial intelligence experts have announced they will boycott a South Korean research university that is looking into how to use AI for weapons, CNN and other media outlets are reporting. The university, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, started a research center that will look to create "AI-based" missiles, submarines and quadcopters by the end of this year. More than 50 leading experts penned an open letter to the university that denounced the killer technology research, Fortune reported. "At a time when the United Nations is discussing how to contain the threat posed to international security by autonomous weapons, it is regrettable that a prestigious institution like KAIST looks to accelerate the arms race to develop such weapons," the experts wrote in the letter. "We therefore publicly declare that we will boycott all collaborations with any part of KAIST until such time as the president of KAIST provides assurances, which we have sought but not received, that the center will not develop autonomous weapons lacking meaningful human control."

In the two months since Richard Watson strapped 200 remote-control-sized transmitters around his cows' necks, an artificial-intelligence system named Ida has pinged his phone with helpful alerts -- when his cows are chewing the cud, when they're feeling sick, when they're ready for insemination. "There may be 10 animals out there that have a real problem, but could you pick them?" he said one morning, standing among a grazing herd of dairy cattle wearing what he calls "cow Fitbits." But on the neighboring pastures here in rural Georgia, other farmers say they aren't that impressed. When a cow's in heat, they know she'll start getting mounted by her bovine sisters, so they smear paint on the cows' backsides and then just look for the incriminating smudge. "I can spot a cow across a room that don't feel great just by looking in her eyes," said Mark Rodgers, a fourth-generation dairy farmer in Dearing, Ga., whose dad still drives a tractor at 82. "The good Lord said, 'This is what you can do.' I can't draw, paint or anything else, but I can watch cows," he said.
Word2Vec word embedding tutorial in Python and TensorFlow - Adventures in Machine Learning
In coming tutorials on this blog I will be dealing with how to create deep learning models that predict text sequences. However, before we get to that point we have to understand some key Natural Language Processing (NLP) ideas. One of the key ideas in NLP is how we can efficiently convert words into numeric vectors which can then be "fed into" various machine learning models to perform predictions. The current key technique to do this is called "Word2Vec" and this is what will be covered in this tutorial. After discussing the relevant background material, we will be implementing Word2Vec embedding using TensorFlow (which makes our lives a lot easier).
