Marvelstone Group, the private investment firm based in Singapore, has launched a private equity fund to drive artificial intelligence (AI) investment. The group will invest in AI startups and projects through Marvelstone Capital, across geographies including the UK, China, Singapore, and Canada. The open-ended, stage agnostic fund is targeting a capital raise of US$20 million in its first stage, with an investment thesis that balances investments between developed and emerging markets to maximise portfolio synergies. One of the fund's first key investments will be into an AI hub project, with capital deployments to begin in 2018. Joel KO Hyun Sik, President of Marvelstone Group, said: "We see AI as a paradigm shifting technology, along with blockchain. The launch of this private equity fund is in line with our earlier announcement from October last year to launch an AI hub. We have also been building a database of global AI startups and projects, with plans to invest in startups at the cutting edge of global trends."

SK Telecom is considered one of most progressive operators when it comes to 5G development. Last year Juniper Research ranked the operator No. 1 on its list of "most promising" 5G operators for its extensive time in development; the breadth and value of the operators' 5G partnerships; and its progress in 5G network testing. So it is not particularly surprising that the South Korean operator is already working on ways to use artificial intelligence (AI) to make its 5G network more efficient. The company realizes without AI there will be a lot manual operations necessary to constantly change the network parameters and settings and to adjust capacity. "We want to talk about how to efficiently operate 5G infrastructure using AI," said Haesung Park, senior manager of the ICT R&D Center, network technology R&D center, access network lab at SK Telecom. Patents are intangible assets, that is they are products of ideas and thinking, and fall under Intellectual Property (IP). Now, IP is subject to the region/country of the applicant and is regulated by the respective government of those countries and regions. For example, in the United States, ML related work are appreciated and the ease of filing patents is considerably less rigorous compared to the European Union, where the emphasis is more on the method or working model which incorporates the related field of work rather than the actual work itself. This again does not hold good all the time with the United States scrutinising software patents. When it comes to India, the patent filing process is again stringent and requires consent from the government authorities even though it promotes filing patents for startups.
