WASHINGTON -- Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is testifying for the first time ever before Congress on Tuesday as he attempts to apologize for high-profile privacy breaches at the social media giant and convince doubtful lawmakers that he can fix the problem without government intervention. Zuckerberg is trying to restore public confidence after recent revelations that data from up to 87 million Facebook users was shared with Cambridge Analytica, a data mining firm used by the Trump campaign in the 2016 election. The information was shared without users' knowledge.


Machine learning offers new way of designing chiral crystals

Engineers and chemists at Hiroshima University successfully used the same technology at the core of facial recognition to design chiral crystals. This is the first study reporting the use of this technology, called logistic regression analysis, to predict which chemical groups are best for making chiral molecules. Results were published in Chemistry Letters. Chirality describes the quality of possessing a mirror image to something else, but without the ability to superimpose it. Your left foot, for example, is a mirror of your right.

This week's omen comes from a piece published over at the Outline on the digital pep talks dating apps like Tinder and Bumble are sending to their users. According to Renรฉe Lynn Reizman, reminders to devote all your attention to the slot machine game of endless swiping are now coming with a little something extra. During a recent binge session of Netflix's Queer Eye, Reizman felt her phone vibrate and, "desperately in need of a little confidence boost," she hoped it was a new match from Tinder. While it was indeed a push notification from Tinder, it wasn't a match.


Fully autonomous 'killer robots' could be here within a YEAR, claims expert

Killer robots could be on battlefields within a year if the UN fails to arrange an international treaty limiting their development. That's the claim of Professor Noel Sharkey, who says early wartime machines could cause mass deaths and they will not be able to tell the difference between enemies and civilians. His comments come as 120 United Nations member states meet this week at the Palais des Nations complex in Geneva to continue talks on the future challenges posed by lethal autonomous weapons system. China's Xi Jinping offers possible trade concessions to US

Chinese leader Xi Jinping has pledged to lower car tariffs, improve intellectual property protection and open up the Chinese economy, addressing United States complaints in an escalating trade dispute. Xi made his remarks on Tuesday at the Boao economic forum on the southern island of Hainan. He did not mention US President Donald Trump directly. "China's door of opening up will not be closed and will only open wider," Xi said in his first public speech since the outbreak of trade tensions between China and the US. Also on Tuesday, it emerged that China filed a complaint against the US at the World Trade Organization (WTO) over steel and aluminium products tariffs imposed by Washington.


Why Automation Might Not Be as Bad For Jobs as Predicted

Fears automation will result in significant job losses may be overblown, according to new research from the OECD. While the research indicates as many as one in seven jobs could be lost to artificial intelligence (AI) automation, those numbers are lower than what had previously been predicted. In 2013, a paper by Oxford University academics Carl Frey and Michael Osborne, predicted that roughly 47 percent of jobs in the U.S. were at high risk of being automated. The paper, The Future of Employment: How Susceptible Are Jobs To Computerization, also showed wages and educational attainment had a strong negative relationship with an occupation's probability of computerization. In other words, the less a person earns and the less likely that person has received a higher education, the more likely their job will be computerized.

LG's flagship G7 will launch in May

LG's artificial intelligence technology, ThinQ, first made its way to the Korean company's phones as part of the V30S. Now, the brand has confirmed that ThinQ is also coming to LG's flagship G-series, specifically the G7 that's debuting in New York on May 2nd and Seoul on May 3rd. According to the company's announcement, the G7 ThinQ's'Empathic AI' -- that's how LG describes its artificial intelligence, which it says is capable of human-like thinking to a certain extent -- is better than its predecessor's. We'll have to wait for the device's official launch to know how exactly it's better than the V30's, though. LG didn't expound on the new phone's features, but Israeli news site YNET got the chance to play with it a bit when it showed up in Barcelona during MWC.


Tencent Partners with Babylon Health, Adds Medical AI to Portfolio - TechAcute

Chinese tech and entertainment-oriented conglomerate Tencent Holdings is collaborating with the London-based health app developer Babylon Health, founded in 2013, to introduce medical chatbot AI capabilities into their solutions. While the press release from Babylon Health does not go into detail about the target scenario, Financial Times writer Aliya Ram suggests that the technology will directly go into Tencent's social messaging platform WeChat. No financial details on the deal have been disclosed. WeChat itself could be considered a hybrid of Facebook, WhatsApp, and Twitter from a functional point of view. Even though they are primarily used only in China, with their 1 billion monthly active users they can be considered as one of the world's most popular communication platforms.
