Air Force Looks to Artificial Intelligence to Fight Future Wars
The Air Force is hoping advances in artificial intelligence mean the abundance of data from its aircraft, weapons and satellites will be easier to access and analyze. "There's certainly a data aspect piece" of artificial intelligence, Air Force Vice Chief of Staff Gen. Stephen "Seve" Wilson said Monday. "I think we all would agree, maybe, that data is the'renewable oil' of the 21st century," Wilson said during the Future of War conference hosted by New America and Arizona State University. "With that data, we have to be able to have the right algorithms that connect the data, and understand the data, to a network. I think the cloud's a part of this, and I think'compute on the edge' is a part of this," he said, referencing a streamlined approach to avoid stovepiping information flow needed at the speed of war.

Zuckerberg referred to AI technology more than 30 times during ten hours of questioning from congressional lawmakers Tuesday and Wednesday, saying that it would one day be smart, sophisticated and eagle-eyed enough to fight against a vast variety of platform-spoiling misbehavior, including fake news, hate speech, discriminatory ads and terrorist propaganda. Over the next five to 10 years, he said, artificial intelligence would prove a champion for the world's largest social network in resolving its most pressing crises on a global scale -- while also helping the company dodge pesky questions about censorship, fairness and human moderation. "We started off in my dorm room with not a lot of resources and not having the AI technology to be able to proactively identify a lot of this stuff," Zuckerberg told the lawmakers, referring to Facebook's famous origin story.

April 12, 2018 --Visit this online directory of the nearly 200 faculty members at Hampshire College and you'll find that, listed between a professor of communications and a visiting professor of video and film, is a petri dish of yellow schmutz. The schmutz is a plasmodial slime mold, Physarum polycephalum, a glob of living cells that exhibits decidedly non-schmutzlike behavior, such as solving mazes and anticipating periodic events – so much so that in 2017 Hampshire, a private liberal arts school in Amherst, Mass., awarded it a position of "visiting non-human scholar." The abilities of non-animals to remember events, recognize patterns, and solve problems are prompting scientists and philosophers to rethink what thinking is. In the 20th century, science demolished the notion that humans are the only animals to exhibit complex thinking; in the 21st, biologists are beginning to see cognition in other biological kingdoms – not just slime molds, but also plants. This shift in thought could not only help scientists better understand cognition's workings and its origins, but it could also help in the search for intelligence beyond Earth.
Chinese police arrest man using facial recognition at concert
Chinese police have arrested a man using facial recognition, after high-tech cameras identified an alleged criminal among fans at a 60,000-strong pop concert. The suspect, known only by his surname Ao, had been in attendance at a concert by Hong Kong singer Jacky Cheung, in Nanchang, Jiangxi province, southwest China, last week. Despite being among thousands of Cheung fans, the system flagged Ao up to security thanks to facial recognition cameras and police arrested him at the show. The 31-year-old from Zhangshu, Jiangxi province, had been on a wanted list for an'economic dispute' in the neighbouring Guangxi province. Video footage shows the moment the shocked suspect is arrested by several police officers, and he can be heard saying: 'My friends and I bought the concert ticket and I went with my wife.
Robots of the future may be given digital serotonin pills to 'stop them getting depressed'
Getting depressed might seem a strange affliction for a robot, but artificially intelligent brains may also suffer from similar mental health problems to people. That's the claim put forward by an American neuroscientist, who says that machines could even hallucinate, if not monitored correctly. Developers will need to create software equivalents to anti-depressants, which help to control levels of the neurotransmitter serotonin in the brain, he recommends. Artificial intelligence and robotic brains may suffer from some of the mental health issues traditionally associated with humans.
