IBM's new AI toolbox puts your deep learning network to the test
IBM today announced the launch of its Adversarial Robustness Toolbox for AI developers. The open-source kit contains everything a machine learning programmer needs to attack their own deep learning neural networks (DNN) to ensure they're able to withstand real-world conditions. The toolbox comes in the form of a code library which includes attack agents, defense utilities, and benchmarking tools that allow developers to integrate baked-in resilience to adversarial attacks. The company says it's the first of its kind. One of the biggest challenges with some of the existing models to defend against adversarial AI is they are very platform specific.

Tech companies like Google and Amazon have convinced people to invite ever-watching lenses into their homes via smart speakers and internet-connected security cameras. Now a new breed of chips tuned for artificial intelligence is arriving to help cameras around stores, sidewalks, and homes make sense of what they see. Even relatively cheap devices will be able to know your name, what you're holding, or that you've been loitering for exactly 17.5 minutes.
Tencent co-leads big data firm MiningLamp's $159m Series C round
China Renaissance's Huaxing Growth Capital and Tencent Holdings have led an RMB1 billion ($159 million) Series C funding round into Beijing-based big data analysis solutions provider MiningLamp Software, according to China Renaissance's official WeChat account. Established in April 2014 by AI expert Wu Minghui, China-based MiningLamp Software specialises in big data business solutions. Its products include LiteMind, a human-robot interaction system, and Nest, a database that can store and search data and images. "We interviewed banks, police and public transportation companies and were surprised that many traditional firms are already embracing big data," China Renaissance managing director Du Yongbo was quoted as saying in a China Money Network report. "But many companies complain that they have difficulty finding data service providers, which provides opportunities for MiningLamp."
AI, GIS, big data helped in successful Bharat Bandh on April 2: Dalit activist
The Bharat Bandh on April 2 called by Dalit groups was a result of the successful use of artificial intelligence (AI), the geographic information system (GIS) and big data, according to a core group of US-based Dalit activists. The protest, which surprised many because of its sudden eruption, was organised against the alleged dilution of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. New Jersey-based Deelip Mhaske, who heads a secretive network of some 100 overseas Dalit activists based in the US, the UK, Australia and the Middle East said the protest shows that Dalits no longer need to be affiliated to any political establishment. "A new era for Dalit politics has begun by adopting artificial intelligence, the GIS and social media," Mhaske told PTI in an interview as he gave an insight into how Dalit groups were mobilised during the protest. Most of these Dalit activists in the secretive group are from the IT sector and work in some of the top info-tech companies.

Ministry of Infrastructure Development launches first robot engineer that operates on AI
DUBAI, 28th February, 2018 (WAM) -- Dr. Abdullah bin Mohammed Belhaif Al Nuaimi, Minister of Infrastructure Development, has launched the first robot engineer in the world that operates on artificial intelligence, AI, while noting that the ministry will acquire an international patent, to benefit from the robot and support its organisational work. He stated that the robot engineer specialises in supporting the decision-making process and decreasing risks, and its areas of work include procedures, operations and project planning, as well as designing and supervising the implementation of projects. Such initiatives are part of the Ministry's efforts to achieve international pioneering and support the country's related goals, he added. As part of the ministry's celebration of UAE Month of Innovation, Al Nuaimi made this statement while reviewing the ministry's key projects, which aim to support its work and make its customers happy. The projects include the 3-D printing of bridges to save time, and the use of drones in two infrastructure projects, titled, "cadastral surveying" and "traffic census," as well as designing intersections in an innovative way and using a robot to clean buildings.
Machines will soon be able to learn without being programmed
Teaching machines to parse through large volumes of data to learn new concepts and rules is a critical area of development in artificial intelligence, experts told CNBC. That concept is called machine learning, and it's been a longtime goal for the AI discipline: The term was coined in 1959 by AI pioneer Arthur Samuel who defined it as a computer's ability to learn without being explicitly programmed. To do that, mathematical models are built and then fed with huge volumes of data, experts said. The algorithms learn to identify patterns and assumptions from those data sets that are then applied to process new information. "We want to be able to use the machine's own capability to learn from complex data," Eric Chang, senior director at Microsoft Research Asia, told CNBC.
Munich AI startup Artisense raises €4 million in new funding round
German AI startup Artisense has announced a €4 million funding round from Project A, Vito Ventures, and Holidu cofounder Chris Hitchen. The startup has developed algorithms for real-time 3D mapping of images. The tech can be applied to autonomous cars and robotics to help them to better understand their surroundings. The new funds will be invested in improving the algorithm, forging industry partners in automotive and robotics, and expanding its offices in Munich, Palo Alto, and Tokyo. "We see Europe increasingly becoming one of the hubs for DeepTech startups. A unique ecosystem has been established that combines innovation, research, and entrepreneurship with huge markets," said Thomas Oehl, managing partner at Vito Ventures.
