Artificial intelligence and robotics will save the Trump economy
In January, Wall Street investors were optimistic tax cuts would sustain economic growth and the Trump bull market. As spring arrives, the world has proven decidedly more uncertain. The administration has not articulated end game goals for the trade standoff with China. President Xi Jinping is offering some concessions but his commitment to industrial policies that target vital American industries remains clear and menacing. An all-out trade war could disrupt global supply chains, nix planned investment spending, stall both economies and tank stocks.
China's children are its secret weapon in the global AI arms race
Late on the night of October 4, 1957, Communist Party Secretary Nikita Khrushchev was at a reception at the Mariinsky Palace, in Kiev, Ukraine, when an aide called him to the telephone. The Soviet leader was gone a few minutes. When he reappeared at the reception, his son Sergei later recalled, Khrushchev's face shone with triumph. "I can tell you some very pleasant and important news," he told the assembled bureaucrats. "A little while ago, an artificial satellite of the Earth was launched."
#CNILux Day 1: Sophie Hackford: Luxury and Artificial Intelligence
Futurist Sophie Hackford returned to the Condé Nast International Luxury Conference for the fourth consecutive year this morning to share the key technology developments that will help shape tomorrow's luxury landscape. In her previous talks, Hackford encouraged delegates - many of whom are the world's top luxury CEOs and designers - to get on board with the internet's new future and not repeat what she saw as the collective mistake of the early Noughties, when the industry did not get online and on-board with e-commerce quickly enough. Today, she expanded her theory that the world is becoming a computer, and delved into the world of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The language of the future, Hackford explained, is the language of machines. But after 60 years of disappointments, in which a lot was promised by AI but not much of it seen, how will it actually transform our lives?
Amazon's Other Jeff Steps Into the Spotlight
Donald Trump has hammered Amazon.com Inc.'s share price in recent weeks by trying to pick fights online with Chief Executive Officer Jeff Bezos. But the actual object of his Twitter onslaught is the domain of Jeff Wilke, Bezos' right-hand man for most of the past 18 years. Wilke runs Amazon's worldwide consumer division, meaning he's in charge of both selling people stuff and figuring out how to deliver the items as efficiently as possible. Often, the company uses the U.S. Postal Service.
How is Artificial Intelligence shaping the future of insurance?
It's no secret that the insurance industry is fundamentally changing thanks to innovations in Artificial Intelligence. With predictions for 2018 showing that insurance data will grow by 94%, 84% of which will be in unstructured documentation, technology is being introduced that is revolutionizing the industry in its entirety. Taking inspiration from groundbreaking technologies like IoT, Big Data and especially AI, investments are at a peak for insurtech companies all over the world. In a recent report by Willis Towers Watson, since 2016, 36 percent more investment, or the equivalent of 2.3 Billion Dollars has been invested across 450 start-ups during the course of last year alone. AI solutions in the insurance sector are gaining popularity – and as a start-up or developer, it's one of the most dynamic and promising business-areas to be active in.
DeNA and Kanagawa taxi group launch improved ride-hailing app to counter industry labor shortage
YOKOHAMA – DeNA Co. and the Kanagawa Taxi Association jointly launched a ride-hailing app Thursday to efficiently match customers with taxies through an improved platform and an artificial-intelligence-based system amid a serious labor shortage. Taxi Bell, which can only be used in Kanagawa Prefecture, has solved some of the problems plaguing existing ride-hailing apps, including complicated operations, long wait times, matching failures and cash payment issues, they said. Potential demand has been estimated at 40 percent, and the companies hope the new app can help meet some of that demand by ironing out such problems. The platforms of existing ride-hailing apps are based on a system where taxis are called by phone and matched through operators. Taxi Bell has improved services by connecting passengers and drivers directly, DeNA said.

How snow leopard selfies and AI can help save the species from extinction Transform
Koustubh Sharma is what you could call a cat scientist with a daunting task, as a wildlife biologist studying one of the world's most magnificent, fluffy-tailed and elusive big cats: snow leopards. Based in Kyrgyzstan, Sharma spends a lot of time trying to solve the riddle of how to study the hard-to-study, threatened species. The alpine cats live in frigid, barren landscapes; roam hundreds of miles and are so adept at solitude that they're dubbed "ghosts of the mountain." In the nearly 11 years that Sharma has studied snow leopards in the highlands of Central Asia, he has seen the thick-furred, rosette-marked feline only twice. His one close encounter was with a large male with a scarred face in southern Mongolia, while standing on a mountain ledge near a freshly killed ibex, a favorite meal for snow leopards.
