Why emotionally intelligent machines are the future of AI
When we think about artificial intelligence, it's usually something involving robot overloads and the answer to how many tablespoons are in a cup. Less often do we think about their emotional intelligence, something so intrinsic to human interaction that we take it for granted. Pamela Pavliscak, CEO of Change Sciences to took the stage at TNW Conference 2018 to discuss the "emotion revolution" we'll see in our machines and software within the next years. For AI and virtual assistants to make the most positive impact, they'll need to know how to understand and behave within the framework of our very human emotional cues. This concept isn't new; technology companies have tried to humanize technology for ages, to varying degrees of success.
Niti Aayog partners Swiss group ABB for AI, robotics in manufacturing
The central government's top policy think tank, Niti Aayog, has entered into an agreement with Swiss engineering group ABB to collaborate over artificial intelligence and robotics in manufacturing. Both parties have signed a statement of intent to support the government's Make in India programme through advanced manufacturing technologies. Moreover, ABB said that Niti Aayog will work with the company to prepare key sectors of the economy for digitisation, Internet of Things and artificial intelligence. The sectors include power, water utilities, food, heavy industries, transport (rail and metro), and infrastructure. ABB also said that the partnership will focus on the electric mobility segment.
Woman says her Echo device recorded and sent a private conversation
Be careful of what you say around your Echo devices. A Portland woman was shocked to discover that Echo recorded and sent audio of a private conversation to one of their contacts without their knowledge, according to KIRO 7. The woman, who is only identified as Danielle, said her family had installed the popular voice-activated speakers throughout their home. It wasn't until a random contact called to let them know that he'd received a call from Alexa that they realized their device had mistakenly transmitted a private conversation. The contact, who was one of her husband's work employees, told the woman to'unplug your Alexa devices right now. 'We unplugged all of them and he proceeded to tell us that he had received audio files of recordings from inside our house,' the woman said.
A Comparative Study of Classification Techniques in Data Mining Algorithms
Classification is used to find out in which group each data instance is related within a given dataset. It is used for classifying data into different classes according to some constrains. Several major kinds of classification algorithms including C4.5, ID3, k-nearest neighbor classifier, Naive Bayes, SVM, and ANN are used for classification. India aiming at equipping defence forces with Artificial Intelligence - ET Telecom
NEW DELHI: After Russia, China and US, India has decided to include Artificial Intelligence in its defence forces with an aim to enhance the operational preparedness of the armed forces. Speaking to ANI, Ajay Kumar, Defence Secretary (Production), Ministry of Defence said that a task force has been set up under the chairmanship of Tata Sons chairman N. Chandrasekaran to finalise the specifics and framework of the project. "Artificial Intelligence is going to influence everything in the future, our common lives also including it also going to affect the future warfare. Most of the major countries in the world are taking steps to ensure that their defence systems are fully empowered by the use of Artificial Intelligence. In India, we have also taken steps in this direction," Kumar said.
There Is No "One Size Fits All" In AI -- Qualcomm Targets A Multifarious Approach
Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) are changing everything in the electronics industry. Engineers are now evaluating how to design and train intelligence solutions in everything from sensors, to smartphones, to networks, to cloud data centers. However, just as there has never been a single processor for every application or workload, so too is there no single solution for AI. Qualcomm appears to be hedging its bets with a distributed AI solution the company calls the Artificial Intelligence Engine (AIEngine) and a dedicated AI accelerator, that was just announced at a company sponsored event in China. At the moment, most of the training of artificial neural networks is done in data centers.

One of the things the company is moving towards is a virtual partner – a combination of AI and natural language processing, which allows someone in the field to verbally request information and give commands without talking to a human. Part of the thinking behind this is that people speak faster than they can type, and the need for field workers to stay aware of their surroundings. "The way you and I consume [mobile data] is a slab of black glass, [but the] fundamental imperative [for a police officer, etc] is eyes-up, hands-free. That slab of black glass [is] exactly the opposite: eyes-down, hands-busy. A big part of how we're navigating this problem is around ethnographics and human factors research – living a day in the life of our users and then [working] with the technologists and designers."
The self-flying M*A*S*H air ambulance takes off
The medevac choppers made famous by M*A*S*H are set for a radical upgrade. An Israeli firm has carried out the first simulated mission using a self flying helicopter designed to fly casualties off the battlefield. The mission, for the Israel Defence Forces, saw an'injured' mannequin loaded onto the $14 million Cormorant UAV, and monitored remotely using sensors and a video link during the flight. The Cormorant has enough strength to carry 1,000 pounds per 30 miles, which means it can haul about 13,000 pounds in a full day. The craft flies itself using an array of laser altimeters, radars and sensors, and it is capable of reaching speeds of 100 knots (115 mph) and operate at altitudes of up to 18,000 feet.
Study: Early AI adopters may gain "insurmountable advantage"
Situational awareness: The report does not name the early adopters nor their industries, but in terms of pure AI research, nine companies -- all in the U.S. and China -- are believed to tower over peers with among the best talent and little chance for anyone else to catch up. They include Google, Microsoft, Baidu and Tencent. What the report says: McKinsey surveyed 3,031 business executives in seven western countries in North America and Europe. Of those self-identifying as "extensive adopters" of AI, 71% said they expect revenue growth exceeding 10%. In McKinsey's view, the signs point to the coming AI-infused giants.
