SoftBank Flips the Venture-Capital Script Again With GM Deal

General Motors, the US's 10th-largest company by revenue, is eager to lay the groundwork for future growth by developing self-driving technology. But its shareholders are dubious of too much spending as revenue declines--it fell 5.5 percent last year. Japanese conglomerate SoftBank has the opposite problem: A giant pile of cash, and not enough opportunities to spend it. The company's Vision Fund does not make investments smaller than $100 million; there are only so many startups worthy of such a large check. That's why the firm has taken a loose interpretation of its artificial intelligence-focused investment thesis, including aspects of human needs that won't be replaced by technology.

Researchers at the University of Toronto have revealed AI software than can tweak your snaps so you can't be identified. They say their Instagram-like filter can tweak pictures so they look the same to human eyes, but disrupt machine learning systems used by web giants to identify users. Researchers from the University of Toronto have developed an algorithm specifically designed to disrupt facial recognition systems. The technology uses a deep learning technique called adversarial training, which puts two artificial intelligence algorithms against each other.

For decades, CPG companies like Coca-Cola have conducted manual audits and surveys to see if, how and where stores stock their goods on shelves, as well as find out if their goods are next to rivals' products and if any out-of-stock items have been replenished. Thanks to technology, this old-school and time-consuming process, prone to human errors, is increasingly being dropped as CPG brands seek to bridge the gap between what they can see in stores and online.

Today's microscopes are 800,000 times more powerful than the human eye, but they still need a person to scrutinize what's under the lens. That person is usually a pathologist -- and that's a problem. Worldwide, there are too few of these doctors who interpret lab tests to diagnose, monitor and treat disease. Researchers have developed a way to integrate living muscle into machines to create a biohybrid robot. Reported in the journal Science Robotics, the study was undertaken at the University of Tokyo Institute of Industrial Science and demonstrates how the researchers developed the use of living tissue within robots, rather than just metal and plastic. Scientists are working on a project that sounds like they're creating a cyborg The new method progresses from individual muscle precursor cells, to muscle-cell-filled sheets, and then to fully functioning skeletal muscle tissues. They were able to incorporate these muscles into a biohybrid robot as antagonistic pairs mimicking those in the body to achieve remarkable robot movement and continued muscle function for over a week. To develop the muscle-powered robots, the team first constructed a robot skeleton on which to install the pair of functioning muscles.

We started by collecting a list of over 7,500 companies claiming to build Artificial Intelligence solutions. We cleaned the data, sorted, and analyzed it.

What if a car is operated by hand gestures or an automated rover that cleans the floor? Well, around 90 engineering students from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are working on such innovative concepts to make them a reality. The students, all final year engineering students from reputed educational institutions in the two Telugu States, are here in the city for a two-month internship programme as part of which they work on several artificial intelligence-based projects and developing apps to understand the nitty-gritty of the Internet of Things (IoT). Students from National Institute of Technology (NIT) Warangal, GITAM College of Engineering in Visakhapatnam and GMR Institute of Technology in Srikakulam among others have formed a talent pool that is working simultaneously on various software projects. They have made two floors of a three-storied building at Atchampeta on the city outskirts their workplace while they are putting up in paying guest accommodations and rented houses near their office premises.


GM's stock surges as Softbank plans to invest billions in automaker's self-driving business

General Motors announced Thursday that Japan's SoftBank will pour $2.25 billion in the automaker's self-driving business, in a significant deal experts say boosts GM's chances to be the first company to deploy autonomous cars nationwide. In exchange for the investment, GM said the investment firm will receive a nearly 20 percent equity stake in GM Cruise, the Detroit company's autonomous vehicle unit. GM's stock soared following the announcement, climbing more than 10 percent in morning trading. The partnership comes as leading technology companies and automakers, including Alphabet's self driving division Waymo, and Tesla are scrambling to pioneer the market for fully autonomous cars. GM said in a press release Thursday the investments are expected to provide the capital necessary to "reach commercialization at scale" next year.
