Artificial intelligence (AI) is expected to transform the productivity and GDP potential of the global economy. According to a report by PWC, strategic investment in different types of AI technology is needed to make that happen. PWC's research shows that 45% of total economic gains by 2030 will come from product enhancements, stimulating consumer demand. This is because AI will drive greater product variety, with increased personalization, attractiveness and affordability over time. AI could contribute up to $15.7 trillion1 to the global economy in 2030, more than the current output of China and India combined.

Separately, SenseTime Group Ltd., an artificial-intelligence company, this week said it received $620 million in fresh funds, less than two months after a $600 million funding round led by Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba. The latest round, which drew investments from Fidelity International, Hopu Capital, Silver Lake, Tiger Global and Qualcomm Ventures, valued Sensetime at $4.5 billion. Investors from the U.S. to China have been plowing cash into technology unicorns--private companies with valuations of over $1 billion. HTC has unveiled its DeepQ artificial intelligence platform that's designed for healthcare units and manufacturers. The company has also revealed that the platform is getting AR/VR integration by next year. Digitimes reported Friday that HTC's healthcare division, called DeepQ, has launched an AI platform of the same name. According to the Taiwanese firm, the new platform is primarily designed for hospitals and manufacturing enterprises. The head of division, Edward Chang, said that the platform will help healthcare units develop AI applications through its user-friendly and easy-to-follow user interface.

Dubai: Thousands of CCTV cameras of various Dubai government agencies will now provide live feed to a central command centre, officials said. Under a new Artificial Intelligence (AI) network, security cameras across will relay live images of security breaches live to the central command centre, Dubai Police said. The cameras will monitor criminal behaviour in three sectors -- tourism, traffic and bricks and mortar facilities. The network, said the police, is being phased in via different stages to meet the Dubai 2021 Vision requirements of a smart city. Announcing the programme, Major-General Khalil Ebrahim Al Mansouri, Assistant Commander-in-Chief for Criminal Investigation Affairs, said the new project called'Oyoon' (eyes) will tackle crimes in the city and help reduce traffic accident deaths and congestion. Earlier, different agencies managed their command centres to receive live feed from the CCTV cameras.

The internal Google email chain also notes that several big tech players competed to win the Project Maven contract. Other tech firms such as Amazon were in the running, one Google executive involved in negotiations wrote.
