About this course: This 1-week accelerated on-demand course introduces participants to the Big Data and Machine Learning capabilities of Google Cloud Platform (GCP). It provides a quick overview of the Google Cloud Platform and a deeper dive of the data processing capabilities. These are just a handful of examples from a new database of over 1,300 new technologies currently making their way through Israeli Technology Transfer Organizations [TTOs] associated with universities, research institutes, and medical institutions. The new searchable database is designed as a layer in Start-Up Nation Finder, a free-to-use innovation discovery platform from Start-Up Nation Central (SNC), an Israeli non-profit that connects businesses, governments, and organizations around the world to Israeli innovation. The new TTO layer gives users the ability to look over the horizon at emerging technologies in drug discovery, advanced materials science, gene sequencing, robotics, and other fields, through cataloguing the patents, companies, and researchers that are registered at 16 TTOs in Israel. SNC combined data from the TTOs themselves, the Israel Technology Transfer Network, and its own data from Start-Up Nation Finder.


IBM Blockchain and AI tech set to reboot marketing

BENGALURU: IBM expects marketing of technology services to become more performance-oriented as it sees increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) and blockchain-based platforms. The company is working on a pilot project using blockchain to effectively use every dollar spent in marketing and reduce middlemen in marketing activities, Michelle Peluso, chief marketing officer at IBM, said in an interview. IT services companies across the globe have seen a shift in types of work contracts with majority of their customers opting for outcome-based deals as against long-term and high-value ones. This has prompted companies such as IBM, Accenture, TCS, Infosys and others re-structure their focus on sales and marketing. The IBM marketing leader believes the role of CMO has changed to make make more data analytics driven decision and focus on more one-toone engagement than year-long marketing campaigns.

When the 300-foot Maersk Launcher docked in San Diego early Monday morning, it unloaded a cargo of hardened black blobs scooped from the bottom of the sea. The blobs are not rocks, but naturally-occurring metallic nodules that could one day yield metal deposits of cobalt, manganese, and nickel--not to mention scarce rare earth minerals. As worldwide demand rises for electric vehicle batteries and wind turbines, along with next generation technologies and weapon systems, demand for these metals has taken off. And the seabed is a prime target for those mining operations. Of course, it's no small feat to bring these potato-sized nodules from the bottom of the remote Pacific Ocean, and then sail them to a processing plant where the metals can be extracted.

Fires have an unfortunate habit of happening in places that aren't necessarily easy to reach. Whether the source of the fire is somewhere deep within a building, or up more than a floor or two, or both, firefighters have few good options for tackling them. They can either pour water into windows (which doesn't always work that well), or they can try and get into the building, which seems like it's probably super dangerous. At the International Conference on Robotics and Automation last month, researchers from Tohoku University and National Institute of Technology, Hachinohe College, in Japan, presented a new kind of snake-like robot with the body of a fire house. Like other snake robots, this one has the potential to be able to wiggle its way into windows or other gaps in a structure, with the benefit of carrying and directing water as it goes.

Apple's brand new iPhone software, iOS 12, will arrive later this year. The new operating system comes with a wide range of updates, from being able to FaceTime multiple people to tracking how you are using your phone. However, probably its biggest feature isn't really a feature at all, but a new focus on performance that should speed up iPhones, even on much older handsets. And all of that will be arriving later this year. The I.F.O. is fuelled by eight electric engines, which is able to push the flying object to an estimated top speed of about 120mph.


Robots & AI creating more jobs in Asia than they destroy Internet of Business

The belief that robots, automation, and AI simply displace jobs and make humans irrelevant is not borne out in Asia, reports Chris Middleton. However, there are lessons to learn from the technologies' impact – in Asia and the rest of the world. Robots and automation are creating more jobs in Asia than they destroy, according to a new report from the Asia Development Bank (ADB). ADB analysis of a dozen Asian economies between 2005 and 2015 found that rising demand more than compensated for jobs lost to automation. The adoption of robotics and other connected systems stimulated higher productivity and economic growth, creating 134 million new jobs, compared with the 101 million lost to new technologies.

The significant advancements made over the last decade in the abilities and cost of parallel computing, algorithms, big data and the transfer to the cloud is expected to bring artificial intelligence (AI) out of laboratories and into the mainstream world. AI is broadly defined as any intelligence demonstrated by machines or software. If a machine is capable of doing more than processing data, for example deriving knowledge from it, and augmenting human decision making, it can be considered as AI. According to data published by Grand View Research, the global artificial intelligence market is projected to reach USD 35.87 billion by 2025, while growing at a CAGR of 57.2 percent. A report by Goldman Sachs emphasized the sweeping changes AI is already causing across a variety of sectors, including advertising (programmatic ad buying), retail (customized recommendations) and investing.

iOS 12: New Apple iPhone software to make devices faster, rather than bring new features

Apple's new iPhone software will speed up its handsets – even when they are old. The company has been repeatedly criticised for the fact that new operating systems often bring new features but slow down the phones that use it. Now its new software will vastly upgrade performance, it has said. The company said that the development of iOS 12 will see it "double down on performance" to make the phones "faster and more responsive". That will apply even to older phones, it said.
