Machine Learning Healthcare Gets Seed Funding PYMNTS.com
Bessemer Venture Partners is launching a $10 million early-stage seed program to back new startups in the healthcare industry. According to TechCrunch, the company's celebrity healthcare investor, Steve Kraus, and its head of investments in Israel, Adam Fisher, will lead the Deep Health Seed Program to invest anywhere between $100,000 and $2 million into startups using machine learning to solve problems in healthcare. The firm has already invested in Qventus, a hospital management service, as well as healthcare companies such as Allena Pharmaceuticals, Docent Health, OvaScience, Verastem and Flex Pharma. Bessemer will specifically be looking for investment opportunities in workflow automation startups like Qventus; digital diagnostics companies that augment or replace human diagnosticians with algorithms; and predictive and programmatic tools to measure and monitor population health. In addition to announcing the new seed funding program, Bessemer also revealed its first investment in a company called Subtle Medical, which is focused on stroke and neurological disorders, improving the quality and speed of medical imaging exams by enhancing the use of lower-quality scans, which will remove the need for repeat imaging procedures.

NEW DELHI: Artificial Intelligence (AI) should be leveraged to provide quality solutions at scale across education, health, agriculture, infrastructure and mobility in smart cities, said Niti Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant. A paper titled'National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence', said, "AI for All will aim at enhancing and empowering human capabilities to address the challenges of access, affordability, shortage and inconsistency of skilled expertise." AI refers to the ability of machines to perform cognitive tasks like thinking, perceiving, learning, problem solving and decision making. In the paper, Niti Aayog has decided to focus on five sectors that includes healthcare, agriculture, education, infrastructure and transportation that can benefit from adoption of AI in solving societal needs. Aiming to truly reap benefits of using AI in all and across sectors, the paper has identified barriers that need to be addressed to achieve success in the use of AI.
Singapore Implements Artificial Intelligence Governance and Ethics Initiatives
In order to drive awareness of the benefits and understand the challenges of AI (such as on ethics[1] and legal issues), IMDA is engaging key stakeholders including government, industry, consumers and academia to collaboratively shape the Government's plans for the AI ecosystem. Such discourse will inform the Government's ongoing plans to support Singapore as a hub for AI development and innovation, and help Singapore to effectively respond to global developments. These initiatives complement IMDA's current suite of business and talent programmes to develop a vibrant AI ecosystem and position Singapore as a leading hub for AI. An Advisory Council on the Ethical Use of AI and Data will be appointed by the Minister for Communications and Information to advise and work with IMDA in the areas of responsible development and deployment of AI. The Advisory Council will assist the Government to develop ethics standards and reference governance frameworks and publish advisory guidelines, practical guidance, and/or codes of practice for the voluntary adoption by the industry.

AI to add $182bn to UAE economy by 2035
Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to boost economic growth in the UAE by 1.6%, adding $182 billion to the national economy by 2035, according to a recent report by Accenture. The report looked at 15 industries in the YAE and13 in Saudi Arabia to dtermine the potential sector-specific impact of AI on the economies of the Middle East. AI will have the greatest impact on the financial services, healthcare, and transport and storage industries, with increases of $37 billion, $22 billion and $19 billion, respectively, in their annual gross value added (GVA), which measures the output value of all goods and services in a sector. Even the labour-intensive sectors of education and construction will see increases of $6 billion and $8 billion, respectively, in their GVA over the same period, with AI enabling people to be more productive, thus leading to gains in profitability. The effects of AI will also be felt in Saudi Arabia, where it is expected to increase GVA by $215 billion.
