Nvidia's latest cloud server platform is intended as a "building block," in the reference design sense, to support AI training and inference along with HPC workloads such as simulations. The GPU vendor (NASDAQ: NVDA) introduced its latest server platform dubbed HGX-2 on Wednesday (May 30) during a company roadshow in Taipei, Taiwan. Nvidia said the cloud server can be throttled up or down to support precision HPC calculations from 32-bits for single-precision floating point format, or FP32, up to double-precision FP64. Meanwhile, AI training and inference workloads are supported with FP16, or half precision, along with Int8 data. The combination is designed for varying processing requirements for a growing number of enterprise applications that combine AI with HPC, the company noted.

Cốc Cốc's browser has gained significant market share in Vietnam This was the response I received when I started chatting with the only other customer at a restaurant in Hanoi, Vietnam exactly four days into my journey traveling and meeting with startups around the world. I had been contemplating how best to break into the Vietnamese startup ecosystem, and this chance meeting proved to be the answer. It turned out the tall, friendly Russian I was speaking with was Victor Lavrenko, CEO of Cốc Cốc, Vietnam's leading local browser and search engine! Over the next few days, I got to visit Cốc Cốc's office and learn more from Lavrenko and CMO Kristina Melentieva about the company and why it's worth keeping an eye on. Only once I left the Cốc Cốc office--with its ping pong table, vibrant color scheme, and full-wall ideation whiteboard--and ventured back onto the street did I fully appreciate the obvious: this company is not operating (and flourishing) in any number of internationally recognized technology startup hubs, but in the chaotic and volatile center of Hanoi.

For the longest time, chips were a little bit boring. But the revolution in deep learning has now opened the market for startups that build specialty chips to accelerate deep learning and model evaluation. Among those is Israel-based Hailo, which is building deep learning chips for embedded devices. The company today announced that it has raised a $12 million Series A round. Investors include Israeli crowdfunding platform OurCrowd, Maniv Mobility, Next Gear, and a number of angel investors, including Hailo's own chairman Zohar Zisapel and Delek Motors' Gil Agmon.

However, these new technologies are likely to prompt elements of jobs to change rather than cause them to go away. And as automation and AI transform the way work gets done, the challenge will be managing the human implications. Once the decision has been made to adopt automation and AI, leaders face difficult and stubborn questions about how to implement that decision – "How, when, and where should we apply automation in our organizations?" No longer is the debate limited to the stark choice between humans versus machines. Today, progressive managers know that automation will substitute human labour for some tasks while augmenting human labour for others and, in many instances, create new types of human work.

Many economies--France and China, most prominently--have either formalised strategies to harness and realise the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) or are already heavily investing in AI. The NITI Aayog's National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence #AIforAll that outlines focus areas for adoption and possible challenges, therefore, merits close attention from policy-makers if India is to leverage AI for growth, development and greater inclusion. Indeed, adopting AI means a 15% boost for the gross value added (GVA) for the economy by 2035--NITI estimates that AI could potentially add $957 billion to India's $6,397-billion dollar GVA projected for that year. The focus areas that NITI has in mind--healthcare, agriculture, education, urban development/ smart cities & infrastructure, and mobility and transportation--hold both great promise and risk for the country. Consequently, the rewards from adopting AI in these areas and the opportunity cost of deferring such adoption will thus be either transformative or ruinous, respectively, for the country.

At the Meet in Beijing Arts Festival in China, robot pianist TeoTronico struck another blow for the machines, beating out his long-time sparring partner Roberto Prosseda in a piano battle judged by audience applause. TeoTronico – who can play a mean Flight of the Bumble Bee and has collaborated with the likes of Lang Lang – made his debut with the Berlin Philharmoniker under the baton of Michelangelo Galeati in 2012. The robot was built by Italian inventor Matteo Suzzi and has many advantages of his human counterparts, not least his 53 fingers.

AMD just did Intel one better at Computex. Intel wowed the Taipei crowds on Tuesday with a 28-core Core chip, which the company promised by the end of the year. One day later, on Wednesday, AMD announced Threadripper 2--and at 32 cores and 64 threads, it will easily top what Intel promised. AMD's Threadripper 2 announcement was the highlight of the company's press conference, which didn't have much to offer in the way of new announcements in graphics. AMD did say that its Vega 56 Nano for mini-ITX systems is now shipping.
