A creepy new AI that transfers facial expressions between people in videos could make fake clips even more realistic. The neural network manipulates facial movements in real footage to produce deceptive videos that can make people appear to say something they didn't. In one example, scientists accurately mapped Barack Obama's facial movements onto Vladimir Putin, making it appear as if the Russian President was reading Obama's speech. Tel Aviv-based artificial intelligence chip startup Hailo Technologies Ltd. has raised $12.5 million in a series A funding round, the company announced Tuesday. Investors include Jerusalem-headquartered equity crowdfunding platform OurCrowd, as well as two venture capital funds dedicated to automotive technologies -- Maniv Mobility, and Next Gear Management Ltd. The latest round brings the company's total funding raised to $16 million.

Automated surveillance is going to become increasingly common as companies and researchers find new ways to use machine learning to analyze live video footage. A new project from scientists in the UK and India shows one possible use for this technology: identifying violent behavior in crowds with the help of camera-equipped drones. In a paper titled "Eye in the Sky," the researchers describe their system. It uses a simple Parrot AR quadcopter (which costs around $200) to transmit video footage over a mobile internet connection for real-time analysis. An algorithm trained using deep learning estimates the poses of humans in the video and matches them to postures the researchers have designated as "violent."

Craig Federighi, Apple's head of software, is tasked with keeping that wellspring of new ideas flowing. One of his main strategies is to get more app developers to use artificial intelligence tools such as recognizing objects in front of an iPhone's camera. The hope is that will spawn a new generation of ideas from Apple's ecosystem of outsourced innovation.

Sonos will bring Apple's new AirPlay 2 streaming technology to its speakers in July, it has announced. The decision will likely make Sonos the first third party to support Apple's new multi-speaker home audio technology. The feature will be enabled through a free software update in July, Sonos announced. It will come only to the company's latest speakers – including the brand new One as well as the older Play:5, and future speakers. The I.F.O. is fuelled by eight electric engines, which is able to push the flying object to an estimated top speed of about 120mph.

Chinese artificial intelligence start-up SenseTime has raised $620m (£465m) in funding, a month after raising $600 million from e-commerce giant Alibaba. SenseTime, which is headquartered in Beijing, develops a facial recognition product which is used by the Chinese government for its surveillance system. Other SenseTime customers include Honda, which uses the technology in its driverless cars, and Chinese smartphone companies Huawei and Xiaomi. The latest investment in SenseTime came from Fidelity International, Hopu Capital, Silver Lake and Tiger Global. Qualcomm also invested in the latest round of funding through its Qualcomm Ventures division.

Although unrelated, the parallel growth in both the sectors has, of course, led to a confluence of the two, as more and more banking and finance institutions explore AI applications to improve their offerings and services. While enterprise-solutions are many – from more efficient data analytics to improved back-end workflows through automation – quite a few organisations have also explored consumer-facing applications of AI. One of the most widely adopted applications has been the consumer chat-assistant. Simply put, a chat assistant (colloquially called a chatbot) is an AI or computer programme that conducts conversations meant to replicate human conversation via auditory or textual means.

DataVan, a 30-year-old point of service designer and manufacturer based in New Taipei City, Taiwan, has brought together partners from a diverse range of fields to expand its ofering from kiosk terminals to total solutions based on its AI, according to a press release. The "QSkip" kiosk footprint and modular design are adaptable to any type of business type, including hospitality, retail, healthcare, public and entertainment, the company said. The upcoming "YumQ" suite of solutions includes smart cloud management, online reservations and ordering, table-side self-ordering management, POS solutions and kitchen display systems. The multipurpose "HiFive" touchscreen panel PC is waterproof and dust proof and can set up in all environments in an instant, the release said. A POS terminal upgrade is also available, the release said.

The European Union is set to cap the cost of international phone calls and text messages between member states, in its latest bid to break down the borders between its constituent countries. Representatives of the European Parliament and member state governments agreed a package of reforms on Wednesday that would cap calls between EU countries at 19 euro cents (17p) per minute and text messages at 6 cents (5p). The measures, if formally approved by MEPs and the European Council, would follow the abolition of roaming charges for travellers across the EU, a popular Brussels policy which came into effect in 2017. Post-Brexit roaming charges will cost business'up to £778 per month' They are part of a larger package of measures, expected to be signed off at a summit of EU leaders in October, to encourage the growth of 5G telecoms and superfast fibre broadband across the bloc. The deal between the Parliament and Council negotiators was struck after 12 hours of talks spanning Tuesday and the early hours of Wednesday.
