Insilico Medicine, a Baltimore-based next-generation AI company specializing in the application of deep learning for target identification, drug discovery and aging research, yesterday announced a collaboration agreement with WuXi AppTec, a leading global contract research outsourcing provider based in Shanghai, China, serving the pharmaceutical, biotech, and medical device industries. "It's a big step not only for Insilico Medicine but for AI and the pharmaceutical industries," said Alex Zhavoronkov, PhD, CEO of Insilico Medicine, Inc.

Fortnite, the world's biggest game, is finally coming to the Nintendo Switch. The game will soon arrive online, Nintendo announced. As with every other platform, the game will be available for free and can be downloaded through the Switch's online store. Zebra Medical Vision, a machine and deep learning start-up, has raised $30 million (€25.47 million) in C round funding, bringing the total investment in the company to $50 million (€42.45 million). The company is also unveiling its Textray chest X-Ray research, which it claims is the most comprehensive AI research conducted on chest X-Rays to date, providing a glimpse into a future automated chest X-Ray analysis product being developed by the company. This round of investment is led by aMoon Ventures with the participation of strategic healthcare investors Aurum, Johnson & Johnson Innovation JJDC Inc. and Intermountain Healthcare and leading global AI experts Fei Fei Lee and Richard Socher. These new investors are joining a list of top existing investors Khosla Ventures, NVIDIA, Marc Benioff, OurCrowd and Dolby Ventures who also participated in this C round. The chest X-Ray AI analytics product was trained using nearly 2 million images to identify 40 different common clinical findings.

Reliance Industries Limited today said it has completed an acquisition of close to 73 percent stake in artificial intelligence-based education technology provider Embibe. "RIL, Embibe and the other stakeholders have completed all the closing conditions and have successfully completed the sale and purchase of the shareholding of the existing investors in Embibe to RIL. With this transaction, RIL will hold 72.69 percent (on fully diluted basis) in Embibe," RIL said in a BSE filing. RIL in April had announced that it has entered into agreements to acquire close to 73 percent stake in education technology provider Individual Learning Private Ltd (Embibe) and plans to invest USD 180 million into the company over the next three years. Embibe will use the capital over the next three years towards deepening its R&D on AI in education, as well as business growth and geographic expansion, catering to students across K-12, higher education, professional skilling, vernacular languages and all curriculum categories across India and internationally.

The use of AI is particularly interesting in the cybersecurity industry because of its unique ability to scale and prevent previously unseen, aka zero-day, attacks. But remember, similar to how drug cartels built their own submarines and cellphone towers to evade law enforcement, and the Joker arose to fight Batman, so too will cyber-criminals build their own AI systems to carry out malicious counter-attacks. An August 2017 survey commissioned by Cylance discovered that 62% of cybersecurity experts believe weaponized AI attacks will start occurring in 2018. AI has been heavily discussed in the industry over the past few years, but most people do not realize that AI is not just one thing, but that it is made up of many different subfields.

The company, Argo AI, has since grown to about 330 employees, in part by luring away software engineers and robotics researchers from Apple Inc., Uber Technologies Inc. and other tech companies. Ford, which holds a majority stake in the company, is banking on Argo to help it catch up in the race to build driverless cars. "Every employee is an owner," said Argo Chief Executive Bryan Salesky. "They're able to benefit from the upside being created in a direct way. That can't be offered with a large company where the stock goes up and down with earnings."

Uber has submitted a patent for a feature that uses artificial intelligence to detect if its customers are drunk, simply by the way they use their smartphone. The'Predicting User State Using Machine Learning' patent aims to identify people in an "abnormal state" from factors including number of typos made, walking speed, and who precisely a customer clicks on buttons and links on their phones. "The user behaviour may be compared against the user's prior behaviour to determine differences in the user behaviour for this request and normal behaviour of prior requests," the patent states. "The system can alter the parameters of a service based on the prediction about the state of the user requesting the service." This means that Uber drivers could theoretically refuse to accept passengers deemed to be in an inebriated state.

China is bankrolling an effort to become an innovator in artificial intelligence to move further its growth into a truly wealthy power, and in part to keep better track of individuals it considers criminals and dissidents.
