Byton's K-Byte Electric Concept Makes Self-Driving Look Good

While Tesla has spent the past six months struggling to ramp up production of the Model 3 and fielding criticism over its Autopilot tech and safety protocols, one of its most intriguing wannabe rivals, Byton, has spent the first half of 2018 positioning itself to swipe Elon Musk's electric innovation crown. The coup d'EV started in January at CES, with the reveal of a screen-stuffed concept SUV. In February, Byton announced a partnership with star-studded Aurora to bring self-driving smarts to its vehicles. And today, at CES Asia in Shanghai, it unveiled a second concept car, a small sedan that can't help but make you think of a certain car rolling off the assembly line in Silicon Valley. Byton's new ride is the K-Byte, a three-box sedan with the front wheels pushed as far forward as possible.

The last ten years have been a rough time for many bank employees in Spain. The country's lenders have laid off 89,500 workers on the back of narrowing margins, industry consolidation, mass closures of branches and gathering digitization. In 2008, when the financial crisis struck, Spain was home to some 278,000 banking professionals; today there are just 195,000. Another 3,000 redundancies are expected in the coming months, as Santander and Bankia plan to further streamline their businesses, pushing the total number of layoffs close to 95,000. The job losses are unlikely to end there. In fact, they could accelerate, especially if a potential new threat to traditional branch and front-office jobs materializes: artificial intelligence (AI).

Is artificial intelligence the next hot thing in ETFs? One big-name investor seems to think so. On Friday, ETF Managers Group filed for the Rogers AI Global Macro ETF (BIKR), blending two popular elements in finance--Jim Rogers and artificial intelligence. BIKR will track an index of single-country ETFs that was developed by Ocean Capital Advisors, a company headed by Rogers, the famous commodity investor and author of several best-selling books on the topic. Rogers' Ocean Capital will also act as the sponsor of BIKR.


'Fortnite' Is Available Now on Nintendo's Switch

Nintendo announced the news Tuesday during its presentation at the annual E3 videogame expo here. "Fortnite," which has more than 40 million players, landed on the Switch today. The move is a coup for Nintendo, whose previous console--the Wii U--was roundly criticized for a spotty lineup of games through its five-year run, including a dearth of the biggest games outside of those the Japanese videogame maker develops itself. "It's vitally important for game publishers to have the widest possible hardware reach for as long as possible," said Lewis Ward, an analyst at research firm IDC. A "Fortnite" appearance on the Switch will mark its sweep of all major game-playing devices.

The NVIDIA Deep Learning SDK offers powerful tools and libraries to data scientist to design and deploy deep learning applications. It contains solutions for both neural network training and in inference. Introduced in 2016, the SDK requires CUDA toolkit for building new GPU-accelerated DL algorithms. Workers Warm To Artificial Intelligence

Most workers globally want to use artificial intelligence, according to a survey of 7,000 workers in the U.S., Asia and Europe in the Automatica Trend Index 2018. Most (64%) workers want to use AI for human-machine collaboration and 73% assume that artificial intelligence makes it easier for people to assign the machine new tasks, such as by voice command or touch pad. The majority of workers globally are worried about how their training can keep up with the pace of the working world, with 64% seeing as positive the fact that robots can help them handle hazardous materials. About a quarter of employees are convinced that training and development already plays a role in the workplace of the future. In the U.S., 74% expect that robotics automation will provide added motivation to further their training, with most expecting the number of higher-skilled and higher paid jobs to rise in the future with new human-robot teams.


IBM And NVIDIA Reach The Summit: The World's Fastest Supercomputer

IBM, NVIDIA, and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) recently announced that they have completed testing the world's fastest supercomputer, Summit, at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Capable of over 200 petaflops (200 quadrillion operations per second), Summit consists of 4600 IBM dual socket Power 9 nodes, connected by over 185 miles of fiber optic cabling. Each node is equipped with 6 NVIDIA Volta TensorCore GPUs, delivering total throughput that is 8 times faster than its predecessor, Titan, for double precision tasks, and 100 times faster for reduced precision tasks common in deep learning and AI. China has held the top spot in the Top 500 for the last 5 years, so this brings the virtual HPC crown home to the USA. Figure 1: The Summit Supercomputer at the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Labs is now the fastest computer in the world. Some of the specifications are truly amazing; the system exchanges water at the rate of 9 Olympic pools per day for cooling, and as an AI supercomputer, Summit has already achieved (limited) "exascale" status, delivering 3 exaflops of AI precision performance.
