Fortnite is now available on Nintendo Switch, but Sony is blocking cross-play with PS4 gamers

Daily Mail - Science & tech

Fortnite is now available to play on Nintendo Switch. The arrival of the free-to-play multiplayer game, which is created by studio Epic Games, was announced during Nintendo's keynote presentation at video game convention E3 in Los Angeles. However, the launch of Fortnite on the latest Nintendo console has been marred by the revelation that Sony will not allow cross-platform support between its PlayStation console and the Switch. The decision has caused outrage amongst Fornite fans. Fornite allows players to sync their progress, skins, and in-game purchases across different platforms using an account with developer Epic Games.

Cyberpunk 2077: What we learned in the most mind-blowing game demo we've ever seen

PCWorld

You want an eye implant? You'll watch the Ripperdoctor lean in to pull your existing, organic eye out (in first-person) and then see the mechanical eye flicker to life. And don't forget to take your post-operation meds. Anyway, the demo took us through two missions. The first, which opened the demo, had us infiltrating a "Scavenger" apartment.

Startup Working on Contentious Pentagon AI Project Was Hacked

WIRED

Last summer, a sign appeared on the door to a stuffy, windowless room at the office of Manhattan artificial-intelligence startup Clarifai. "Chamber of secrets," it read, according to three people who saw it. The notice was a joking reference to how the small team working inside was not permitted to discuss its work with others at Clarifai. Former and current employees say the group was working on a controversial Pentagon project using machine-learning algorithms to interpret drone-surveillance imagery--and that Clarifai's secrets were less safe than they should have been. A lawsuit filed by former employee Amy Liu this month alleges that Clarifai's computer systems were compromised by one or more people in Russia, potentially exposing technology used by the US military to an adversary.

Inside Amazon's Painstaking Pursuit to Teach Alexa French

WIRED

Moving to a new country can be hard. You don't know the language. Cultural differences create conversational landmines. And you just can't be sure that everyone will like you. As it turns out, that as true for people as it is for Amazon's Alexa voice assistant, which officially sets up residence in France today.

Improving how machines listen

#artificialintelligence

These patterns are wirelessly sent to rooms full of whirring, blinking supercomputers that translate them into words, meanings and actions. Behind this technology are decades of artificial intelligence research and millions of lines of computer code. We stand on the shoulders of giants when we say, Play Beethoven's Fifth, and our device responds with music to our ears: "da-da-da DUM," the opening of the composer's most famous symphony. Today, Stanford Medicine researchers are exploring ways to use intelligent listening technologies, natural language processing, machine learning and data mining to deliver better, more efficient health care. Here are a few of these projects.

AI, Data and the Future of Procurement

"I'm sorry George, I'm afraid I don't have an answer for that!" Recently I overheard my 6 year old son, George asking Siri if she had a willy. For those of you not familiar with either small children or colloquial English, try it yourselves, and see what happens! We will no doubt all have seen the amazing demo from Google and, whether it was as'real' as Google made out, this tech is coming. Microsoft also have one just in China for now, but again it looks amazing. These two tech giants are investing big and your future workforce i.e.

Artificial intelligence and human development

#artificialintelligence

AI is an area of computer science dedicated to creating software that can be taught to perform complex procedures. What makes AI "intelligent" is that it can learn new behaviours, improve performance as more experience is gained, and make decisions and predictions based on available data. The algorithms at the core of some AI systems are trained using the large datasets that are now available thanks to the "big data" revolution. It is the intelligent capabilities of AI systems that allow for the automation of tasks that until now required human judgement to deliver. There is enormous potential for how AI can benefit the developing world and what it can contribute towards achieving the UN's Sustainable Development Goals: AI can play a crucial role in augmenting healthcare capacity by filling gaps in human expertise, increasing productivity, and enhancing disease surveillance.

Dixons Carphone hack: Millions of customers' details stolen in huge cyber attack

The Independent - Tech

Dixons Carphone has been hit by a major cyber attack that has left millions of customers' details exposed. The company has lost nearly 6 million customer bank card details and more than a million personal data records, it said. The group said that, while 5.8 million of the payment cards targeted were protected by chip and pin, around 105,000 non-EU cards without chip and pin protection were compromised. Dixons Carphone said relevant card companies had been notified, but added that there was no evidence of fraud on the cards as a result of the incident. Kim Kardashian asks Twitter boss to add edit button at Kanye West's birthday party

The Independent - Tech

Two weeks after meeting US President Donald Trump to talk about prison reform, reality TV star Kim Kardashian West revealed on Twitter that she has been lobbying once again – this time with one of Silicon Valley's most influential tech figures. Kardashian West claimed she might have persuaded Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey to introduce an edit feature for tweets, sparking anger among Twitter users. "I had a very good convo with @jack this weekend at Kanye's bday and I think he really heard me out on the edit button," Kardashian West tweeted on Wednesday. Mr Dorsey replied:"Now I see why I was invited!" The I.F.O. is fuelled by eight electric engines, which is able to push the flying object to an estimated top speed of about 120mph.

Nasa's Opportunity rover may have died on Mars, engineers fear

The Independent - Tech

Nasa's Opportunity rover may be dead on Mars, engineers fear. The little robot has been travelling over the planet for the last 15 years, but has lost contact with its team on Earth. They fear that the rover might never wake back up, and its mission could come to an end. Opportunity ran into problems in recent days when a Martian storm that is covering a quarter of the planet swept over the rover. That blotted out the Sun's light, leaving it unable to charge its batteries. From the International Space Station, Expedition 42 Flight Engineer Terry W. Virts took this photograph of the Gulf of Mexico and U.S. Gulf Coast at sunset This image of an area on the surface of Mars, approximately 1.5 by 3 kilometers in size, shows frosted gullies on a south-facing slope within a crater.
