In contrast, AI transforms data into decisions without understanding any underlying principles," said Holm. "Applying AI to engineering and science will require a culture shift: either we will learn to trust decisions that we do not understand, or AIs will evolve to base their decisions on principles that humans can interpret and control."

BEIJING – China's navy carried out drills in the South China Sea to simulate fending off an aerial attack, state media said on Friday, as China and the United States trade barbs over who is responsible for heightened tensions in the disputed waterways. U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo expressed concern during a visit to Beijing on Thursday over China's efforts to militarize the seas. His remarks came after a flurry of U.S. activity in the region, including reports last week that U.S. Air Force B-52 bombers had flown near disputed islands that drew a sharp rebuke from China. China's navy carried out a simulated missile attack in an unspecified area of the South China Sea using three target drones making flyovers of a ship formation at varying heights, the official army newspaper said. The drills were part of efforts by an also unspecified training base to prepare for real-life combat against aerial targets after China's leadership said some training failed to prepare troops effectively, the paper said.

At the Computing Conference 2018: Shanghai Summit on the same day, the company officially launched the ET Agricultural Brain, a program expected to achieve an in-depth fusion of artificial intelligence. So far the ET Agricultural Brain has already been applied to pig breeding, as well as apple and melon farming. "We hope that AI technology could help farmers and enterprises make safer, more nutritious and profitable products," Hu noted. According to Su Zhipeng, a senior researcher with Tequ Group, one of the major cooperators of Alibaba Cloud, a pig will make different sounds when eating and sleeping compared to when it's sick. The ET Agricultural Brain can judge whether a pig is sick by analyzing acoustic features and infrared thermometry.

As machine learning and artificial intelligence pervade the computing environment, the drive for better hardware resources is increasing significantly. NEW DELHI: The government is looking to tweak the existing intellectual property regime to make it more flexible and widen its scope to encourage research and innovation in artificial intelligence (AI). A high-level task force will soon be set up to examine and issue appropriate modifications to the existing intellectual property regulatory regime pertaining to AI. The government has chalked out a plan to use AI to improve India's social indicators. The proposed task force will have representatives from stakeholder ministries and departments like information and technology, company affairs, Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion and the Niti Aayog. "The current IP regime with its stringent and narrowly focussed patent laws is posing a challenge to AI applications given the unique nature of AI solution development," a senior government official told ET.
