Beijing subways may soon get facial recognition and hand scanners
A bio-ID surveillance framework that can recognize subway users may soon come to Beijing. China Daily reports two forms of bio-recognition being put forward -- palm touch and facial recognition. Together, they could offer a viable long-term solution to ease congestion issues and help reduce fare evasion. Beijing's subway is the world's busiest; it groans under the weight of around 10 million daily commuters and is a prime candidate for ticketless operations. That's where the bio-ID tracking comes in: once properly installed, cameras with online network connections would be able to identify individuals entering the city's subway stations, and palm scanning devices would allow riders to use their hands in lieu of a traditional tickets.

IBM pits computer against human debaters
SAN FRANCISCO – IBM pitted a computer against two human debaters in the first public demonstration of artificial intelligence technology it's been working on for more than five years. The company unveiled its Project Debater in San Francisco on Monday, asking it to make a case for government-subsidized space research -- a topic it hadn't studied in advance but championed fiercely with just a few awkward gaps in reasoning. "Subsidizing space exploration is like investing in really good tires," argued the computer system, its female voice embodied in a 5-foot-tall machine shaped like a monolith with TV screens on its sides. Such research would enrich the human mind, inspire young people and be a "very sound investment," it said, making it more important even than good roads, schools or health care. The computer delivered its opening argument by pulling in evidence from its huge internal repository of newspapers, journals and other sources.

IBM's 'unsettling' Debater supercomputer is pitted against a human in debate between man and machine
IBM's new AI supercomputer has been shown to argue, rebut and debate humans with incredible skill. Named Project Debater, the'unsettling' AI competed in what the company describes as'computational argumentation'. This is when debaters know a subject, present a position and defending it against opposition. Neither the machine or nor the human debaters were given prior knowledge of the subject of the on-stage debate, which took place in San Francisco. Both man and machine were asked to present a four-minute introductory speech, a four-minute rebuttal to the other's arguments, and finish with a two-minute closing statement.

"It is more important than good roads or improved schools or better health care," it added. Noam Slonim, an IBM researcher who helped oversee the project, estimated that the technology could have a "meaningful" debate on those 100 topics 40 percent of the time. IBM chose the topic for the live debate before it began. In some cases, the machine's lengthy speeches hinted at how it was stitching together its arguments -- identifying relevant sentences and clauses and then combining them into a reasonably coherent, computerized thought. Google Duplex is also limited to narrow tasks.

Google has announced it will open an Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) research center in Accra, Ghana this year, becoming the first A.I research center in Africa. The search engine's giant made this announcement in a blog post on Wednesday. Google Chief executive Sundar Pichai tweeted '' excited that we'll be opening a new Google AI center in Accra, Ghana''. He added '' really looking forward to our research teams solving challenges with AI for Africa and beyond''. The AI center will bring together machine learning experts and engineers on projects focused on technology and its numerous applications.
