Horses really can understand humans in the same way that dogs do

Psychologists say horses use a combination of facial expressions and voice tones to work out how people are feeling - and they can even do it with complete strangers. The study could help us develop a better relationship with the species, which humans have depended on for more than 5,500 years. According to the researchers, horses could even catch-up to dogs in terms of human emotional intelligence, if changes to training are made in response to the latest findings. It has been suggested that recognition of social signals such as emotions play an important role in how horses live and interact with humans. Unlike dogs, few studies have investigated horses' awareness of human emotions.

Last year China unveiled their ambitious plan to become the world leader in Artificial Intelligence (AI) research and deployment by 2030. In the roadmap the country's Central Government made it clear that not only did they want to expand their research and development capabilities but also find new ways to implement its use across every sector of their society, from industry, where it's being used to monitor the brain waves and emotional wellbeing of workers, to policing and defence, and even urban planning. Recently though it's been revealed that education is also a target and that several new AI innovations are already being tested in Chinese schools to "redefine how children are educated." While the broader deployment of AI and especially facial recognition software in many other countries is all too often mired in controversy, especially over concerns of accuracy, bias, and obviously personal privacy, the Chinese central government, which doesn't have to be beholden to anyone, has no such constraints. Now a report from People.cn, a state-run media news outlet, has revealed that a high school in Eastern China is testing a new facial recognition system that monitor students, and their levels of engagement, in real time.

The map of Damascus in the first Assassin's Creed was 0.13km². Since then, the map in each successive game has been bigger than the one before. Based on that history, we can expect the map for the upcoming AC: Odyssey to be bigger than last year's brilliant AC: Origins. Dimitras Galatas put together a short video comparing maps from several of the Assassin's Creed games. The map of Greece for Odyssey is shown at 130km², a substantial increase over the tiny map of Damascus and more than 2.5 times as large as AC: Origin's 80km² map of Egypt.

She quickly calls Denmark's health-emergency hotline, where a person answers the phone--but a computer is eavesdropping. As the operator runs through a series of questions--the patient's age, physical condition, what he was doing when he fell--the computer quickly determines the man's heart has stopped and issues an alert. "Those human dispatchers have an amazingly hard job," says Andreas Cleve Lohmann, co-founder of Corti SA, a Danish artificial intelligence software house that created the program. "This software can help them save lives."


Beijing's metro is thinking about introducing facial recognition turnstiles

Well, you can now look forward to a brave new world where all you'll need to enter the metro is your face. Chinese state media has reported that Beijing Metro officials are mulling over the possibilities of allowing passengers to enter the city's subway network by scanning either their faces or their hands. At this point, the proposal is still very much in the planning stage and it's unclear how exactly the system would work, but it further portends a Black Mirror-esque future in China where privacy is continually sacrificed for the sake of convenience. Of course, China already has quite a number of sophisticated facial recognition cams, using them to catch criminals at Jacky Cheung concerts and to track down BBC reporters. A Huawei rep called the tech underlying this proposed system "mature," while subway authorities said that they see it as a way to potentially improve efficiency and reduce costs on the world's busiest metro network -- with 3.78 billion trips delivered last year.

Chinese AI Chip Maker Cambricon Raises Massive Funding Round Led By SDIC Venture

Chinese artificial intelligence chip maker Cambricon Technologies Corp Ltd. has raised a series B round worth several hundreds of millions of U.S. dollars led by SDIC Venture Capital, a subsidiary of state-owned investment holding group China Reform Holdings Corp Ltd, China State-owned Capital Venture Investment Fund and its sub-fund Guoxin Qidi Fund. CICC Capital, CITIC Securities Goldstone Investment Fund, TCL Capital, a Chinese Academy of Sciences fund, as well as some existing investors including Alibaba Innovation Ventures, also participated in the round, according to Cambricon's announcement on its official WeChat account. Cambricon said its post-money valuation has reached US$2.5 billion. Cambricon was founded in 2016 by Chen Tianshi, a professor at the Institute Of Computing Technology at the Chinese Academy Of Sciences. In 2016, the company launched a processor, named Cambricon-1A, which it claims to be the world's first commercial chip for deep learning.
