AI Business Ecosystem Takes Shape in Guangzhou After 37 Chinese Firms Join Its AI Institute
The Guangzhou International Artificial Intelligence Conference convened in the southeastern Chinese city's Nansha district on June 23 and 24, and 37 AI companies entered into a tenant agreement with the Guangzhou International AI Industry Research Institute at the main forum of the conference on its inaugural day. Their affiliation with the institute will contribute to the formation of an AI business ecosystem in the city, Chinanews.com The firms are noted for their strong technology research capabilities and have nine research teams led by national academy members Ni Guangnan and Chen Guoliang, fellows from the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, respectively, and seven teams led by other scientists. They include one integrated circuit design service provider, one AI algorithm service firm, six transport technology developers, four urban security and governance companies, as well as companies specializing in medical services, financial risk management and natural language processing. Guangdong boasts geographical advantages and a solid foundation in traditional industries, leading Chinese expert Liu Zhen noted, and the local government has rolled out policies to foster AI technology development as an emerging industry, which may turn the town into a future AI industry base.

Detectives in China say they can catch criminals using artificial intelligence--and if you don't believe them, consider the case of the potato thief at the pop concert. Officials in the eastern Chinese city of Jiaxing in May used A.I.-powered facial-recognition technology to nab the alleged tater taker from a crowd of more than 20,000 people attending a performance by Hong Kong crooner Jacky Cheung. Moments after passing through the concert's security system, the unsuspecting suspect was busted: An algorithm matched his face with an image from a database of "most wanted" mug shots. Authorities seized the man on charges of stealing $17,000 worth of potatoes. The thief was the third fugitive to be arrested at a Jacky Cheung concert in as many months using software developed by Beijing's Megvii, among the many Chinese groups pioneering ways to combine A.I. and facial-recognition capabilities.

When it comes to sports betting, most people lose. But during the 2014 World Cup, a team of statisticians beat the bookmakers. They correctly predicted Germany -- their home country and 6-to-1 underdogs -- as the final champions and raked in a 30 percent return with bets placed on regular matches. This year, the team, led by Andreas Groll of Germany's Technical University of Dortmund, is back with an artificial intelligence program with even better odds. As of Friday morning, it had correctly predicted 15 of 24 games -- the winners, the losers and those who tied. As for the ultimate victor, their new model has picked Spain, but only if Germany falters before the final.
Major Patent Offices Meet to Discuss Adoption of AI Tools Lexology
Last week, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) hosted the annual meeting of the heads of the world's five largest intellectual property offices, commonly referred to as the IP5 (see a related press release). In addition to the USPTO, the members of the IP5 include the European Patent Office (EPO), the Japan Patent Office (JPO), the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO), and the State Intellectual Property Office of the People's Republic of China (SIPO). Together, the five offices handle approximately 80 percent of the world's patent applications. The goal of the IP5 is to eliminate unnecessary duplication of efforts amongst the IP5 offices as well as increasing the efficiency of patent examination efficiency and quality. During the meeting, the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the patent system was identified as one of the main strategic priorities for the offices.
AI to the fore in war on cyberattacks
CYBERATTACKS from nation-states may have hogged the limelight, but the startling truth is that most cyber attacks are driven by organised criminal gangs targeting profits. With such attacks becoming more frequent, more sophisticated - and more damaging to a company's customers and other stakeholders - the traditional "moat-and-firewall" security measures are no longer enough, said Lee Hui Li, IBM Asia-Pacific vice-president for global business partners. Artificial intelligence technologies and increased collaboration between the public and private sectors will be crucial in the war against cyber crime. "Like a human immune system, today's cybersecurity defences need to find those attacks that will eventually breach a perimeter, quarantine and remediate them, across an organisation's data, applications, mobile and end-point devices," she said. Noting that many organisations use up to 50 security products from some 80 vendors, she added: "Non-integrated, point-product security solutions are insufficient."
Will Artificial Intelligence be the answer to BFSI cyberattacks?
CIO Magazine reports that the BFSI sector will be the key target of cyber-criminals this year. They write, "BFSI companies were possibly the biggest target of cyber-criminals over the last couple of years. The trend is likely to continue as cyber-criminals will continue to find innovative ways to steal identity and money." Until recently, cybersecurity measures in the banking industry have been far from the latest technological advancements. Yet, increasingly creative security breaches and continuous frauds in the financial services industry have forced the BFSI to reboot their security strategies and adopt new technologies for their cyber security management.
Unmasking A.I.'s Bias Problem
WHEN TAY MADE HER DEBUT in March 2016, Microsoft had high hopes for the artificial intelligence–powered "social chatbot." Like the automated, text-based chat programs that many people had already encountered on e-commerce sites and in customer service conversations, Tay could answer written questions; by doing so on Twitter and other social media, she could engage with the masses. But rather than simply doling out facts, Tay was engineered to converse in a more sophisticated way--one that had an emotional dimension. She would be able to show a sense of humor, to banter with people like a friend. Her creators had even engineered her to talk like a wisecracking teenage girl. When Twitter users asked Tay who her parents were, she might respond, "Oh a team of scientists in a Microsoft lab. They're what u would call my parents." If someone asked her how her day had been, she could quip, "omg totes exhausted."
