Fortnite made over $300 million in May. Fortnite developer Epic Games earned over $300 million in May, topping the nearly $300 million the company pulled down the previous month. It's also a game that's on multiple platforms, from mobile to Nintendo Switch (though it launched on the latter in June) and has a pretty brilliant monetization scheme. Between the Battle Pass and pay-to-purchase cosmetics, the game is at once incredibly accessible and easy to spend money on---or not. Fortnite earned $318 million in May, up 7% from April.

Galaxy S10 Will Have 3D Facial Recognition, In-Display Fingerprint Scanner
The Samsung Galaxy S10 is heavily rumored to arrive with an in-display fingerprint scanner. Now a new report from Korea claims that this could be true and that the Galaxy S10 won't have an iris scanner, but could come with an iPhone X-inspired feature. Samsung has not requested any of its suppliers to make iris scanners for the Galaxy S10, according to The Bell. The Korean news outlet claims that the upcoming Samsung flagship phone will have an in-display fingerprint scanner and 3D facial recognition technology, which will function a lot like Apple's Face ID on the iPhone X. Samsung is still lagging behind Apple when it comes to 3D facial recognition. The South Korean phone maker did introduce an Animoji competitor called AR Emoji on the Galaxy S9, as pointed out by The Verge. However, Apple already has an answer to AR Emoji called Memoji, which will arrive with the iOS 12 update later this fall.

According to the report, in terms of the overall scientific and technological strength of AI, the US ranks first among the G20 countries followed by China, whose technological strength in AI has increased significantly, especially in the past five years. China has performed outstandingly well in the first three fields among the four branches of AI--machine learning, natural language processing, computer vision, and speech processing. But while the output of the country's scientific research has surpassed that of the US, improvements are needed in terms of the quality of the output. The report focuses on the scale of research output, academic impact, and international cooperation among the G20 countries, as an indication of China's position in the competitive landscape, as well as the challenges it faces.

BEIJING -- Anhui Provincial Hospital became China's first intelligent hospital in August, using artificial intelligence-enabled systems to help doctors with medical diagnoses and treatment. Four months later, the hospital, in Hefei, Anhui's provincial capital, was renamed the First Affiliated Hospital of University of Science and Technology of China. Yan Guang, the hospital's deputy head and the man in charge of its intelligent transformation, said that when it launched an AI-enabled smartphone application in 2016, doctors and nurses were keen to use it. Developed by iFlytek, an AI company based in Hefei, the system uses speech-recognition technology to type up medical records and image-recognition technology to help doctors read medical images.

Wireless carriers around the world are pushing to bring 5G service to their customers as quickly as possible, but the new radio access networks--which will rely on emerging technologies including millimeter waves and huge antenna arrays known as massive MIMO--will be a lot more complicated than what came before. Nokia is applying machine learning to some of the problems that result from this complexity, hoping that artificial intelligence can boost network performance and cut costs, Rajeev Agrawal said recently during a 5G summit at the Computex trade show in Taipei, Taiwan. Agrawal, who is in charge of Nokia's radio access network offerings, presented three possibilities for machine learning and 5G that Nokia has studied internally but not yet published in academic research papers. In a MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) network, cellular base stations send and receive radio frequency signals in parallel through many more antennas than are normally used on a base station. This means the base station can transmit and receive more data, but these signals also interfere with one another.

Drones are everywhere and when a Japanese company creates a drone to power an umbrella, we say, why not? According to Sora News 24, Asahi Power Service, the Japanese company, has created a prototype'hover parasol.' A four-rotor drone equipped with a camera and artificial intelligence is able to position itself to protect it from the sun or rain. At first glance, it feels like drone is attached to a parasol or umbrella. It looks more like a traditional umbrella, with a handle, suggesting it would only be activated in short bursts when you need both hands to perform a particular task.

To make stock market listing attractive for startups, leading stock exchange BSE has decided to launch a new platform next month to list the new-age companies. This platform will facilitate the listing of companies in sectors like IT, ITES, bio-technology and life sciences, 3D printing, space technology and e-commerce. Besides, the platform will aid in listing of companies from hi-tech defence, drones, nano technologies, artificial intelligence, big data, virtual reality, e-gaming, robotics, genetic engineering, among other sectors. In order to provide further incentive to startups, the exchange has announced BSE startup platform at its SME (small and medium enterprise) segment. "We will launch the platform on July 9," an exchange official said.
