U.S. startups involved in 'critical' technologies at risk from Chinese influence
SAN FRANCISCO โ Danhua Capital has invested in some of Silicon Valley's most promising startups in areas like drones, artificial intelligence and cybersecurity. The venture capital firm is based just outside Stanford University, the epicenter of U.S. technology entrepreneurship. Yet it was also established and funded with help from the Chinese government. And it is not alone. More than 20 Silicon Valley venture capital firms have close ties to a Chinese government fund or state-owned entity, according to interviews with venture capital sources and publicly available information.
Honda ends development of its bipedal Asimo robot
We've been enjoying Honda's Asimo (Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility) robot ever since Engadget existed, but now Honda has announced that this robot project is winding down. The technology behind Asimo isn't going away, however, as it will be put to use in other products, like the Walking Assist device we've seen or its self-balancing motorcycle. The project hasn't seen any big updates since an autonomy-heavy revision in 2011, and without any future as a commercial product, company bosses are pulling the plug. Don't assume Honda is through with robotics and AI, however, the segment is one-third of its "2030 Vision" along with mobility and energy solutions. According to Kyodo News, a company official said it has plans to develop more bipedal robots, although they might not bear the Asimo name.
Commentary: Washington Needs to Adopt AI Soon or We'll Lose Millions
Since I recently held a series of congressional hearings on artificial intelligence (AI), I've been asking constituents, friends, and strangers what's the first thing that comes to mind when I say the phrase "artificial intelligence." If my interlocutor is older than me, he or she describes something close to HAL 9000, the scary computer from Stanley Kubrick's sci-fi film 2001: A Space Odyssey. If the person is younger than me, he or she describes something like Ava, the manipulative and willing-to-kill humanoid robot played by Alicia Vikander in Alex Garland's thriller Ex Machina. Having talked to government agencies about their engagement with AI and spoken with folks in the private sector about the challenges and opportunities AI brings, I've learned we are far from a HAL or Ava scenario becoming reality. The government adoption of AI will not bring about a government being run by robots.

Robot Sophia tells leader how Hong Kong can succeed as smart city
A humanised robot named Sophia who was created and programmed locally advised Hong Kong's leader on Wednesday on how to succeed with plans for a smart city. In a nine-minute dialogue with Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor at the American Chamber of Commerce's smart city forum in Wan Chai, Sophia anticipated "even greater things" in Hong Kong's blueprint for innovation as unveiled by the top official last December. Dressed in a dark blue sleeveless top and at times blinking her eyes and smiling gently, Sophia gave Lam a pat on the back when answering a question on which part of the blueprint was her favourite. "My favourite part, unsurprisingly, is initiatives to attract a venture capital fund to support entrepreneurship and promote technology to parks such as Science Park, which is my home base, and facilitate research and development for universities," Sophia said, as she addressed Lam as "chief executive". Though Hong Kong slipped one notch to second after the United States as the world's most competitive economy in a ranking last month, Lam said the city was striving to become smarter by boosting innovation and technology in areas such as transport, payment systems and government data-sharing.
Nintendo revives sales of palm-sized Famicom console
OSAKA โ Nintendo Co. has resumed sales in Japan of a smaller, palm-sized version of its 35-year-old popular Famicom game console, in response to requests from fans for its revival. Many stores in Japan sold out of the Nintendo Classic Mini Family Computer console after its initial release in November 2016, and the firm halted its production in April 2017. As of Thursday the mini console is now back on sale, preloaded with 30 games -- including "Super Mario Bros." and "The Legend of Zelda" -- and carries a suggested retail price of ยฅ6,458 (about $59). Players can plug the console into a television or PC monitor and play the games with a pair of controllers. Major home electronics chain Yodobashi Camera Co. promoted the console at a flagship outlet in front of JR Osaka Station. A 43-year-old man was among the customers who purchased the palm-sized device, saying, "I was not able to buy it at the first launch due to supply shortages.
Not too late for Europe in the AI race, experts say Science
Beware all the hype about artificial intelligence. In fact, experts say, the technology is still in its formative stages โ and so Europe still has an opportunity to overtake an early American and Chinese lead in the field. Though news reports of artificial intelligence can sound space-age, in fact the underlying technology of "the current AI is very old," he says. "It is about 30 years old and it is really stupid," he told a workshop on AI at a conference on innovation in the EU organised by Science Business. "The next generation will be the big revolution. We haven't seen anything yet," Myllymรคki added, explaining that the next wave of AI systems will help knowledge workers retrieve information, enabling them to focus on more creative tasks.

The world has a fake news problem. And with the speed and scale of false information being spread across the internet, it can seem impossible to stop. Artificial intelligence could be a way to slow its spread--and help stop companies profiting from intentional or accidental dissemination. The method will be complex but the idea is simple. AI can be trained to identify fake news and gather data on sites that are the most prolific in peddling it--or just sloppy in their fact checking, experts say.

The system, which involves sending information to a centralised computer linked to the city's transport networks, is part of a trial by Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. The Chinese tech giant is hoping to use its cloud and data systems to tackle issues hobbling China's healthcare system like snarled city traffic, long patient queues and a lack of doctors. Alibaba's push into healthcare reflects a wider trend in China, where technology firms are racing to shake up a creaking state-run health sector and take a slice of spending that McKinsey & Co estimates will hit $1 trillion by 2020. Tencent-backed WeDoctor, which offers online consultations and doctor appointments, raised $500 million in May at a valuation of $5.5 billion.
