Indian Railways to use artificial intelligence to manage track maintenance blocks
NEW DELHI: Artificial intelligence (AI) that can diagnose the condition of rail tracks will be used by the railways to prepare a repair and replacement calendar and improve punctuality of trains, according to an official. In India, unplanned track maintenance work is often cited as a reason why train operations descend into chaos. Use of AI, the official said, will ensure that at least 90% of trains run on time as routine maintenance work would be planned in advance on the basis of the AI-aided calendar. All large maintenance blocks will be taken up only on Sundays to minimise the impact of train delays, the official said, adding that the national transporter is already procuring automatic track detection machines which, through AI, can predict the life of tracks and track joints. The move is also seen substantially reducing the number of train accidents.

India is facing an acute shortage of skilled healthcare professionals and hospital beds, and the situation can change if doctors embrace Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven devices and wearables/apps at hospitals, a new report said on 10 July. There are 29 skilled healthcare professionals for 10,000 people -- way below the global average of 109 and the lowest score across all 16 countries surveyed, according to the first edition of India's Future Health Index (FHI) by Royal Philips, a global leader in healthcare technology. Another barrier is the low number of hospital beds 7 per 10,000 in India in comparison to 38 per 10,000 on average globally, the findings showed. "While top hospitals and clinics in metro cities may boast of having cutting-edge technologies, semi-urban and rural areas are yet to fully leverage the potential of digital healthcare," the survey noted.
China, Russia, and the US Are All Building Centers for Military AI
Russia and the United States are moving closer to opening their own centers for military-related research into artificial intelligence, as China did in the spring of last year. But the three governments have differing approaches. The U.S. Joint Artificial Intelligence Center aims to apply lessons from an Air Force pilot project to other military services, while the Chinese approach fuses civilian and military research and Russia's efforts are closely directed from the Kremlin. "What's interesting is the extent to which the Russian government and especially the Ministry of Defense is marshaling resources for the development of AI for its military," said Sam Bendett, an associate research analyst at CNA and a fellow in Russia studies at the American Foreign Policy Council. The new innovation technopolis, dubbed Era and slated to open in September with a bare-bones research staff, is planned to grow to a 50-acre city by 2020.
