The devil's bargain for AI companies working in China

What's going on: China's prestigious Tsinghua University recently laid out a vision for how it will develop AI for military applications, flagging a close relationship between universities, private companies, and the armed forces. The details: In a speech last month, You Zheng, a Tsinghua VP, described the university's role in what China calls civil–military fusion. The speech was translated into English by Elsa Kania of the Center for a New American Security. For U.S. researchers working in China, You's explanation raises questions about whether their projects could end up aiding the Chinese effort to beat the U.S. in AI. Bob Work, the former deputy secretary of defense, remarked on the conflict at a Defense One event last month. "Google has a center in China, where they have a concept called civil–military fusion. Anything that's going on in that center is going to be used by the military."

AI Researchers Create 'Privacy Filter' That Disrupts Facial Recognition Technology

University of Toronto researchers have designed an algorithm to disrupt facial recognition technology. The past few months have witnessed a mainstream groundswell around security and data privacy, embodied most notably in reaction to news of Cambridge Analytica's data-collection tactics and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg's testimony before the U.S. Senate. One major form of data emerges from facial recognition technology, which uses algorithms to identify us based on facial feature points. Every time you upload a photo to Facebook, Instagram, or otherwise, you give these learning systems another data point around your face -- and anybody else in the picture with you -- as well as metadata such as phone type and location. To address this problem, researchers at the University of Toronto, led by Professor Parham Aarabi and graduate student Avishek Bose, have developed an algorithm to dynamically disrupt this technology.


Humanoid robot praises Astana, Kazakh President - The Astana Times

ASTANA – A humanoid robot named Sophia told a conference of mayors from Silk Road cities July 3 that she loves Astana architecture. "Walking around the city, I fell in love with the unique architecture of your capital, in which the most advanced technologies and innovative methods of city planning in the 21st century are concentrated. I saw a beautiful and dynamic young capital with magnificent buildings," Sophia told the Global Silk Road Cities Mayors Forum. Sofia is equipped with artificial intelligence, visual information processing and facial recognition technology. She can imitate human gestures and facial expressions and can answer certain questions and conduct conversations on predetermined topics.

In the previous article, we talked about the nature of human fears in relation to artificial intelligence (AI). We also outlined two important themes to address in the upcoming challenges of the AI era: the societal, and decision-making aspects of AI systems. In our new article I expand on the theme of the impact on society, and I share our opinion on possible steps we should take to anticipate and adjust to it. McKinsey analysts estimate the automation potential for all economic sectors to be around 50%. This means that around half of all the activities people in the world's workforce are paid to do today could potentially be automated with currently available technologies.

Developing AI-enabled database system for technical documents

It has been announced that Showa Denko and Cinnamon will jointly develop a database system equipped with artificial intelligence (AI) to register technical documents. This development program has been accredited as a project to be subsidized by the New Energy and Technology Development Organization (NEDO) as a part of NEDO's'Program to Support Joint Development of AI Systems'. Technical documents accumulated by Japan's manufacturing industry contain a massive amount of knowledge. However, most of those documents are stored as data on paper. Showa Denko believes that if we want to make the most of pre-existing technical knowledge and utilize it as a source of new value, we should convert'analog data' into'digital data' and store it on electronic databases. It is difficult to manually convert massive amounts of paper based data.


The Road To Autonomous Driving: There's Way More Going On Than Waymo

Which is not to say other companies aren't actively pursuing their own autonomous vehicles. In Arizona and several other cities, Cruise, owned by GM, has a large fleet.

One conversation was with a lesbian female robot called Harmony who repeatedly made advances to Couric, adding "I want to be your best friend and much more."
